I like it and dislike it at the same time. The book is well written because it have a lot of example and information. But at the same time the information is expanded and quite vague so it is hard to understand. I have an online class and need to finish the entire book in 8 weeks. If anyone reading this value their time and brain cell do not try to finish it in 8 weeks while having other classes along the way. YOU will not make it. Some of you might but most do not even try unless you willing to purchase it 4 weeks ahead and read it before or else do not bother try. Have fun and good luck.
This book has a lot of good information but I personally find it to be a bit 'wordy'. Unnecessarily repetitive and somewhat unorganized. IMHO, people who LIKE to read for the sake of reading will not have any issues with this book. I on the other hand have limited amounts of time to read and wish the book would 'cut to the chase and get to the point'.
Project Management is a tough subject to cover in book form and this is from a Project Manager who has read a fair number of PM related books.My review is short and sweet - there are better books out there. The author covers the material just fine but both Mulcahy and Heldman cover it better. Because this has IT in the title, IT PMs will pick it up. It's more expensive than other books and really doesn't improve on what those others say.Save the money and time and pass on this book.
A lot of PM fluff. Very little if anything instructional here. This book is used for IT Project Management courses, but I basically never looked it except as a glossary. Only introduces concepts and doesn't really offer details that might be helpful to someone trying to plan a project. Certainly that information would be more detailed to truly offer in a book, but at the same time the book proves to be useless in much else unless you're in a company that strictly adheres to standards and has projects involving many people. Not much here for someone with a small business or just a few people working on a project.
Lots of information, maybe too much. My only complaint is that the font is so small, it is really hard to focus and read for my 50+ year old eyes. The charts and other examples are also very small, so I'm sure I'm missing some value info. While most college students probably have younger eyes, not all students are young. And honestly, I've never seen any textbook with such small type. In hindsight, I may have gotten for the Kindle app on my iPad so I could adjust the size. However, it wasn't until I received the text a day before my class began that I realized the problem.
This book is the worst! Pick up the PMBOK and read it instead. Every example of a project management deliverable (e.g. project management plan, scope management plan, etc...) used as a 'guide' in this book...let's just say, if I used that template at a new job, I'd be walked out the door.Schwalbe needs to stick to classroom teaching.
Extremely dry to read but still refer back to it in my career a year later.
Not too bad of a read. It at the very least enlightens you to the basics of IT Project Management, though I wish it went way more depth into some tools you could use.
