Review

One of this year's most compelling new entries. ...meaty commentary from leading Open Orthodox figures on everything. One of this year's most compelling new entries. --David Wilensky, JTA- Jewish Telegraphic Agency" (03/29/2015)"By all criteria the Lieberman Open Orthodox Haggadah by Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld released just two weeks before Passover is a smashing success Congregants have already bought every copy, yet historians should acquire a copy of this work to document the changes in American Jewry. This Hagadah offers a message for active people- doers who want to change the world. The haggadah reflects an ethos that educated laity should take an active role. And several synagogues in various parts of the US replaced their long time rabbis with newer YU rabbis who are more about inclusion, family activities, and social orientation. A haggadah can only contain this much critique of the system if a significant number of homes did not already feel alienated. In short, this Haggadah oozes moxie and a direct appeal to those who like the Orthodox lifestyle but find a tension with what they perceive as the abuses of the system. All who are hungry for this moxie, let them come and eat. --Alan Brill, Kavannah blogI highly recommend reading the haggadah … good for your midot or character building I find the content meaningful and thought provoking The haggada has many useful features, including the simple questions (great for opening discussions with children) in each section. --Birkat Chaverim Blog

I was disappointed in this Haggadah. The essays are good, but could have used better editing. I was looking for text commentary, but got a manifesto instead. Though I agree with the stands taken, this just seemed like an easy way to get the author's religious world view out into the public sphere. Haggadot sell well, in general.

I read this Haggadah before Passover and Rabbi Herzfeld's insights and views are extremely enlightening. I also used it at both Seders, and it added a level of intellectual stimulation that is hard to come by. There are entries geared towards adults and children alike so the whole family can enjoy.Highly recommended!

ok

This is not a typical text with commentary. Instead, the commentary is mostly fairly long essays: some closely tied to the Haggadah, others less so.One of the first essays explains what Herzfeld means by "Open Orthodoxy"- a commitment to traditional halacha, but a willingness to resolve close calls in favor of innovation (especially on women's issues). Some other interesting points made in some of the essays:*One of the more interesting essays discusses the Four Sons ritual. The essay notes that the Torah's apparent reference to the wicked son was (according to one legend) "a good prophecy." Why? Because even if we reject the views of the Wicked Son, "the mere fact that he is studying Torah is a blessing."*Why does Avi Weiss (the creator of the "Open Orthodox" idea) favor female clergy? Weiss writes that there are, and should be, natural barriers between Orthodox rabbis and female congregants; for example, the general Orthodox view is that the rabbi shouldn't dance with her at a wedding or even study alone with her behind closed doors. Female clergy can do these things.*Should an adult drink wine during the Seder or is grape juice adequate? Another essay summarizes the wide diversity of views on the topic (assuming that no health issues prevent one from drinking wine). Some traditional rabbis argue that wine is special, because it alters the senses and thus symbolizes freedom. Others emphasize that taste is subjective, and that it is better to drink grape juice if you don't like wine.*Why does the Haggadah include language asking God to "pour out your wrath on the nations that know You not."? One essay points out that this prayer should be read in conjunction with more universalistic prayers that are said next. The first prayer emphasizes that Jews should "stand up for their own dignity" while the latter prayers emphasize our long-term goals of universal peace and brotherhood.

The haggadah is a book that Jews read during the Passover Seder meal to recall the exodus from Egypt and be inspired to develop a society today when all people, Jews and non-Jews, males and females, and people of all colors can be fully free. This book contains the entire Seder readings along with twenty-four short, enlightening discussions. Among them are an essay by Michel Martin, a non-Jewish veteran host of National Public Radio who writes about the “blessed” impact on her and her family of serving as the buyer of the hametz (the unleavened products) from Jews who attend the local synagogue, the neighborliness this created, and the subsequent result that “half a dozen men from the congregation came running to my aid” when she and her family needed help. Balinsky Friedman writes about the need for congregations to become sensitive to the pain of women who suffer because of infertility, and describes a healing ritual that some groups of women have used to help such women. Rabbi Weiss urges readers in his essay to be sensitive to all people. He notes that we need to be careful about past ideas; for respected rabbinical authorities sometimes made decisions based on incorrect ideas. The author of Mishnah Berurah, for example, thought that women could not understand the words of blessings. These are some of the many topics discussed and explained in this haggadah. Readers will delight in the ubiquitous explanations of the text, the provocative questions, and the discussions of topics such as how to prepare spiritually for Passover, the transformative nature of the four cups, and the meaning of such items as the afikoman.

I like to buy a new Haggadah every year if I can. This enables me to continue to learn something new and bring this new information to the seder table. In my search for a new Haggadah, I look for content and beauty. In the Lieberman Open Orthodox Haggadah Rabbi Herzfeld has presented us, not only with the traditional haggadah text, but with thoughtful questions, comments, and guest articles that illuminate some of the burning issues of our own day such as the Agunah and women's voices. The introduction of these issues in the commentary of this contemporary Haggadah are useful not only for seder table discussion points but for further research and discussion. Rabbi Herzfeld is to be commended for producing this handsome new Haggadah. The illustrations ( and questions) that accompany the text by the award winning artist Caryl Herzfeld truly enhance the publication. I only wish that the artist's name was listed on the title page.

This book is a work of a twisted mind. The so called open orthodox movement are people who’s minds are so open, that their brains fell out. They are a group of rebels seeking the destruction of authentic Judaism. Shame

Gr 9 Up–Unhappy in a new country and a new boarding school in recently independent Zimbabwe in the late 1980s, Robert Jacklin joins class leaders whose bullying games become increasingly violent and anti-black as they fight to regain their lost country, culminating, in his senior year, in a plan to assassinate Mugabe.α(c) Copyright 2013. Review

"Honest, brave, and devasting-more than just memorable. It's impossible to look away."In this novel set in 1980s Zimbabwe, bullies, victims, and bystanders in a boys’ boarding school form the drama, and white British high-school student Robert Jacklin plays all three roles. Rooted in the author’s personal experience, the story describes school conflict that echoes the unrest of national politics. The local whites hate President Mugabe for taking their land, but Robert’s dad at the British embassy is thrilled that the blacks are getting back the land they lost. Or are they? With a huge cast of students and teachers, it is not easy to keep the characters straight. Wallace never romanticizes either side, though. The racist insults and the constant violence extend from the dormitory and classroom to the local villages, and as the students join the turmoil, Robert must confront his own shame. The story’s climax is over the top, but the fast-paced school drama, with issues about guilt, survival, and responsibility, will pull older teens, and adults, too. *"This novel excels, bringing readers up to the grim, uncertain present with mastery."

Boarding school life in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe perfectly depicted, with all the trialsAnd tribulations that go with it. From one who has been there, in that place - trust me.And it descends into a dark place that is terrifying yet compelling......a must-read.

This book is almost always in action so it is good for readers who love to be reading exciting books. The only objection I have to this book is all the cussing. If you have a rule against cussing then I strongly advise that you don't read this book. Although it's a great book and fun too.

It is a sad commentary on humans. Interesting to see how people of that time period and that place (Zimbabway) thought & lived.

What would I have done in that situation? Take a good look at yourself and wonder. Very well written; compelling story.

A devastating story that pulled at the depths of my compassion. Wallace explored the human ability to survive against the odds and the ways we devise to cope. When pushed far enough humans are capable of doing things we wouldn’t imagine. Wallace brings this all out in the painful story of youths placed in an impossible, but plausible environment. I could taste the depression. There seemed no relief. The time was during the political shift of power from white supremacy to a black president following the 1980’s war in Zimbabwe. The county’s culture didn’t change fast enough and the effects of the war devastated the psyche of a boarding school there. Alliances built between young men, naturally and due to the war, had consequences no one should be required to confront. It’s a story of the dark side of humanity. I hurt for protagonist and antagonist. It depicts a painful, but educational experience of the effects of racism on both sides of the divide and down the middle. It reminds us we are acting in compliance by not acting at all. I hated knowing, but was compelled to read. It left me informed, introspective and sad.I only gave it four stars, because I couldn’t stand to feel the pain rereading it and five stars is my indicator of what I may reread.

I picked up this book looking for something light, having just ploughed through "Pilgrim's Progress". But in fact, no. This book was heavy for a different reason altogether. It follows a teenager as he grows up in a private high school in the newly independent Zimbabwe. Son of a British diplomat, his father sees Robert Mugabe as a great and magnanimous leader. The Zimbabwe born friends in school have different opinions. This book is a tense novel, set in frightening times. There are plenty of racist attitudes on display by characters in the book, but in fact it is about much more than racism. This is a book about power and politics but more especially about hatred and strife in all walks of life, and where it leads. This is definitely a book to make you think. I found it in the young adult section, but it is just as much a book for old adults too. Too heavy for younger children though.

A boy (the protagonist) who becomes a expert shooting guns and pistols the very first time he tries it is pure fantacy. That he at the same time learns to ride a motorbike without any training, also not to believe. Though a readable drama with engaging cheracters. Good beginning and dramatic end.
