I will admit that I approach craft books with trepidation. So many of them push you to develop your writing their way, rather than finding your own path. So many of them insist you write every day to improve your word counts or develop the habit if writing. I’m not sure where this idea that if you are a serious writer you write every day came from. Is writing every day a good thing? Absolutely! Does it work for everyone? Absolutely not! I am a full-time writer, sort of. By that, I mean that I write Monday through Friday during the same hours, just as if I’m going to work on a schedule. I use a time tracker app called Timesheet on my phone to track the hours that I work and I strive for about 25 hours a week. I’d love to do more but I have parental responsibilities that prevent that right now. I never, or rarely work weekends.Rachel Aaron’s 2K to 10K does none of this. In her book, she discusses the methods she used to increase her word count from about 2000 words a day to over 10,000. The book started as a blog post and went viral so she decided to turn it into a book. I found this book abundantly helpful in learning how to be more efficient with my writing and have already noticed a difference in my productivity. She offers advice in actually increasing your word count when you are sitting down to write, but she also offers advice in how to streamline other writing tasks such as plotting, outlining and editing so those tasks move more quickly as well. What she doesn’t do is insist that her way is the only way. She urges you to use her suggestions and tailor them to fit your needs. She admits to being a plotter and says “You are your own writer, which means only you can understand how to best tell your stories. So with that in mind, please don’t think of anything in this book as gospel.”I’ve found many of her suggestions easy to tailor to my own needs, and very helpful in increasing my productivity and I’m looking forward to trying her editing suggestions when I get to that point with my next novel. If you are a writer who is frustrated with your productivity, don’t give up! Keep looking for the habits that work for you! Give Rachel Aaron’s book a try, it’s got lots of great ideas and advice in it.

Amid the self-promoting there are some helpful gems of common sense here.It is clear that the author is a "plotter" and plans her writing with perhaps a bit more detail then she lets on in this how-to primer for newer writers. She is prolific and has a gift for turning out books quickly. Her method of pre-planning works well for her, and should at least be considered by novice writers. It has helped me increase my work count to as much as a 1000 words a day (since I work at a day job I don't have the luxury to pick my best writing time--unless I get up at 3 am. Still, a lot of what she says is common sense wisdom from a veteran writer.Even for "punsters" (writing by the seat of your pants) like me, there is some nuggets to ponder. Hashing out a general course will speed up the writing process and leave you with less time staring at the keyboard. And, at least during the first draft, you must turn off the editor in your head or you will get nothing done. So, for a buck, it's worth a look. But remember, her way is her way. Find a method that works for you.

Every point made in this book is common sense. But when you look at what you are doing and follow the easy steps Rachel points out, you have success. I haven't gotten to the 10,000 word a day, and probably never will, but I have doubled my daily word count. And this is the pace I am happy with. I find I even have more focus on the days I am just editing and not writing. I believe that is due to me knowing when is the best time for me and being knowledgeable about what tasks I have coming up.

I am a would-be-author who was struggling for 18 months to complete my fiction story. My daily word count was poor and I was able to complete only few sentences a day. (if I wrote at all). At the start of January, I had only completed 40% of my story (btw, I didn't know it at that time) and I was starting to get desperate and wonder if I could ever finish the book. When I first started writing, I thought I would complete it within 6 months. 18 months later, I was floundering with no idea how much time it would take. Some time in early January I bought this book, hoping to find some answers, any answer to my vexation. And boy, this was manna! 2k to 10k showed me in a scientific and logical way, what I was doing wrong and more importantly, how to fix it.It took me a week to unlearn my current style of writing, and use Rachel's three-pronged approach to writing. Did it help me? From 13-JAN-2013 to 10-FEB-2013, I completed the balance 60% of the story which meant...YIPPEE! I had completed the FIRST DRAFT of my story! The story had literally blazed off the screen and my keyboard had became smokin' hot with the typing. Note that I now knew the dates I'd been writing plus the word count per day. With her method, I now knew exactly where I was in the story, what was going to happen next; and how much of the novel was complete. Now, I am writing this review in March and you might be asking what was I doing for the past 1 month. I was...Editing.I had meanwhile read Self Publishing for Fiction and it was a pretty good book. The challenge? It didn't tell you how to edit quickly. In the past one month, I was able to edit a grand total of 2 chapters. My pre-Rachel days loomed at me. I was back to square one with my hopes of Publishing still distant.I remembered that there was a chapter on Editing in 2k to 10k, but I had pooh-poohed through it, thinking that it wouldn't apply to my book. Now a month later, I went back and read through the chapter on Editing. And the scales fell off my eyes! I am using her three Editing Tools now. She said to use multiple colors to track threads. I tried that on paper, but found the highlighting feature in Word easier to do. I immediately found some continuity issues with my story and am now working on those toughest problems first.Final Thoughts: Rachel Aaron makes you so motivated in this book. You just feel like writing and writing. Its a short read, but I have gone through the book 3-4 times, and each time I have found something new and helpful. If you are stuck with your novel and don't know a way out, I PLEAD with you to read this book. My word count increased by 4x to 12x and I am sure even if you double your speed, you will be glad.If you relate to my story and can identify with it, say Yes below, then scroll up and grab this book. You will not regret it.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, August 2014: In the last few decades of the 19th century, the world looked very different from the way it does now. Parts of the map were unfilled--chief among those spaces was the North Pole, which many believed contained warm currents that might provide safe passage. Enter James Gordon Bennett, the wealthy and eccentric owner of the New York Herald. Bennett--who was responsible for sending Stanley in search of Livingstone--wanted to produce another thrill for his readers, so he funded a naval expedition to reach the pole. Captained by George Washington De Long, the U.S.S. Jeannette shipped out in 1879 toward glory and parts unknown. The Jeannette became encased in ice, but the adventure was only just beginning. Author Hampton Sides does a masterful job of setting up the voyage against the backdrop of the Gilded Age, developing fascinating characters along the way, and delivering a true triumph of narrative nonfiction. Drawing on journal entries, letters, and eventually his own visit to the region, Sides paints a vivid, moving, and breathless portrait of the crew of the Jeannette. How could a book about this much snow and ice be this good? --Chris Schluep

Review

"Enthralling… In the Kingdom of Ice is a brilliant explosion of narrative non-fiction: detailed, moving, harrowing, as gripping as any well-paced thriller but a lot more interesting because it is also true… Too often American heroism is presented at one-dimensional success against the odds… This is a much more subtle and rewarding book, an account of magnificent disaster, of courage devoted to attempting something that could not be done."--The Times of London  “As our knowledge of the world increases, it must be difficult for audacious explorers to find terra incognita to match their passion. Surely the same frustration holds true for writers in that worthy genre, exploration literature: Haven’t all great stories been told? Never underestimate the ingenuity of a first-rate author. Hampton Sides’s In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette, which recounts the astonishing tribulations of a group of seafarers determined to be the first men to reach and reconnoiter the North Pole, is a splendid book in every way… It would be malicious to ruin the suspense about the fate of the Jeannette’s crew… The book is a marvelous nonfiction thriller.”--The Wall Street Journal"Compelling....Sides spins a propulsive narrative from obscure documents, journals and his own firsthand visits to the Arctic regions visited by the Jeannette and its crew. In the Kingdom of Ice makes for harrowing reading as it recounts the grim aspects of the explorers' battle for survival: illness, crippling frostbite, snow-blindness and the prospect of starvation. As grisly as the details are, you keep turning pages to find out how DeLong and his men pull themselves past each setback — even though there's always another one looming ahead."--USA Today“[Sides] brings vividness to In the Kingdom of Ice, and in the tragedy of the Jeannette he’s found a story that epitomizes both the heroism and the ghastly expense of life that characterized the entire Arctic enterprise…With an eye for the telling detail, he sketches the crew members as individuals…The bare facts of what happened to the Jeannette’s crew are easily Googleable, but if you don’t already know the story, In the Kingdom of Ice reads like a first-class epic thriller. De Long and his companions became explorers of not only unknown geographical territory but also extremes of suffering and despair. In his stoic endurance of disappointment and pain, De Long rivals Louis Zamperini, the hero of Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken…”--Lev Grossman, Time Magazine“First-rate polar history and adventure narrative...wonderfully evocative.... Sides vividly recounts the horrors [of the voyage]. In the Kingdom of Ice is a harrowing story, well told.--The New York Times Book Review“Unforgettable…a pulse-racing epic of endurance set against an exceedingly bizarre Arctic backdrop…[Sides’] descriptions of the physical challenges the men face and the eerie landscape that surrounds them are masterful. As De Long and his crew attempt to save themselves, the story grows in suspense and psychological complexity…More strange and fantastic turns follow, involving uncharted and uninhabited lands, and it pains me that I cannot describe them without spoiling the pleasure of those who have not yet read In the Kingdom of Ice. Sides’ book is a masterful work of history and storytelling.”--The Los Angeles Times“America’s own brush with epic polar tragedy, the subject of Hampton Sides’ phenomenally gripping new book, is a less well-known affair…What ensued — a struggle to survive and a nearly 1,000-mile trek across the Arctic Ocean and into the vastness of Siberia — stands as one of the most perilous journeys ever. Sides works story-telling magic as he evokes the pathos and suffering of what unfolded: De Long and his crew endured hardships that boggle the mind. But there is also beauty here… [Sides] writes superbly on the geography of Siberia and the Arctic, and the abundant bird and animal life the explorers encountered on their travels, which took them across ice, storm-tossed seas, treacherous tundra, rocky seacoasts, and volcanic islands.”--The Boston Globe“…harrowing and impeccably paced.” --The New Yorker"A dazzling page-turner.....”--Nathaniel Philbrick, New York Times bestselling author of In the Heart of the Sea, Bunker Hill and Sea of Glory“[A] stunningly vivid account.....”--Mark Bowden, New York Times Bestselling author of Black Hawk Down  “An astonishingly good story....”--Candice Millard, New York Times bestselling author of The Destiny of the Republic  and The River of Doubt"Hampton Sides conjures the doomed USS Jeannette and her courageous crew with haunting power...."--Caroline Alexander, New York Times bestselling author of The Endurance and The Bounty"A spellbinding tale....”--David Grann, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost City of Z "Hampton Sides is one of America’s most expansive and engaging storytellers, and he proves it again with the incredible saga of the USS Jeannette...."  --Scott Anderson, New York Times bestselling author of Lawrence in Arabia"A vivid tale of exploration set in a howling, deadly wilderness."--T.J. Stiles, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt

Bestselling author Hampton Sides in his new book In the Kingdom of Ice gives us a true story of heroism with the polar voyage of the USS Jeannette. I have read a number of books about Arctic exploration and efforts to reach the North Pole, but I was not familiar with the Jeannette. It is quite a tale.People have long been obsessed with polar exploration to this day but just imagine how they felt about it in the late nineteenth century. The North Pole was a mystery. How can you get there? What is really there? Theories abounded.James Gordon Bennett was the strange and stupendously wealthy owner of The New York Herald. He had recently funded an expedition for Stanley to Africa to find Dr. Livingstone. Now he wanted to fund an official U.S. naval expedition to reach the North Pole. The expedition would be led by Captain George Washington De Long, who was famous for a rescue operation off the coast of Greenland. The plan was for De Long to lead a team of 32 men deep into uncharted Arctic waters. The USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco on July 8, 1879.Things did not go well. The Jeannette was soon trapped in pack ice. After two years of a struggle for survival, the hull was breached and the ship sank. The members of the expedition were marooned a thousand miles north of Siberia with only minimal supplies left. The decision they made then was to march across a wasteland of ice to try to find help.In the Kingdom of Ice is an amazing true story and is well worth reading. Mr. Sides should have another big seller.

You can read the synopsis up top, so I won't bore you with that. I will, however, recommend that you read this. If you are here, I will assume you have an interest in either the author's work or, more likely, the history of polar exploration. I have not previously read any of Side's other books, but with a fairly strong interest in the history of the exploration of the poles, I can heartily recommend this. This is first-rate narrative history, well-written and paced to create a gripping account. "Novelistic" can be used as an insult to history writing, but I use it here as a compliment. This is a page-turner. Unfortunately, having read this in galleys, there is no index, nor are photos provided, but the end notes are thorough and this seems to be very well researched. The letters written by Lt. DeLong's wife during the time he and the ship and crew were out of contact are hear-warming and -rending and provide an excellent counter-point and commentary on the main narrative, and the author's access to the surviving journals and letters of the other crew members allow him to paint full-bodied portraits of the men on the ice. You come very quickly to care about these men and their fates. The story of the Jeannette is, like many explorations before and after it, one of extreme heroism, a good deal of heartbreak, and high adventure for those of us in armchairs. This is a fine addition to the literature.

Let me start by stating that Hampton Sides is clearly one of my favorite non-fiction authors. His previous books, HELLHOUND ON HIS TRAIL, BLOOD AND THUNDER, and GHOST SOLDIERS are among my all-time favorite recommended books. So when I learned his new book KINGDOM OF ICE was being released I had to pre-order it and dropped what I was reading to dig right in. My first thought as I began to read about the USS Jeannette and its ill-fated voyage of discovery in 1880 was that I had read about this incident before. And in a way I had but not the very same story or even about the same ship. Yet rather amazingly Jennifer Niven’s two books about the doomed 1913 polar voyage of the Karluk (THE ICE MASTER and ADA BLACKJACK) follow a similar story to Hampton Sides new book. Both stories are based on scientific voyages setting out via the Berring Strait to prove ridiculous theories about the North Pole in what were well prepared ships which got stuck and drifted in the ice before sinking. It appears that both these boats sank very near each other north of Wrangel island (the Karluk north east of the island and the Jeannetter north west). After their ships sunk both crews had to make heroic treks over ice and sea to the coast of Siberia. These three books make up a great trilogy of tragic Arctic scientific Exploration. For those of you who have not read Jennifer Niven’s two earlier books I expect you will really enjoy the whole of Hampton Side’s most excellent telling of the USS Jeannette and its crew. Many of the newspaper reviews seem to indicate that the first part of the Side’s book is a bit slow to build up to the eventual survival story which occupies the second half of the book. But I found the opposite to be true as the first half is most interesting and has many interesting facts as to how the voyage was conceived and bios of its captain and crew as well as its financer James Bennett who was looking for a good story for his New York Herald newspaper. I just could not get over the fact that their seemed to be so many similarities between the two survival stories. As to the Jeannette voyage it appears they wanted to confirm what most scientific thought at the time. It was widely believed that the Polar sea north of the ice was warm and even perhaps a location of a lost civilization. No one seemed to care what Whaler’s thought who regularly sailed these waters. Wrangel Island (which plays a part in all the books discussed here) was thought to be attached to Greenland and a warm water current would take explorers through the ice to this warm water sea. It didn't take the crew of the Jeannette long to disprove then current thinking. I probably will have to go back and re-read ICE MASTER because it seems hard to understand that after the results of the Jeannette voyage some 30 years later the Karluk would again attempt the same fool hardy voyage.

I have seen a couple of the ruins in Yucatán and found them interesting. This book is the story of the discovery by the author and his artist friend in the 1830's. There are more ruins than I ever imagined. Of interest too are some of the events and people that they met. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the Mayans.

This is the chronicle of a second trip Stephens and Catherwood undertook to the Maya area, in search of lost ancient cities. In Stephens' great prose and profusely illustrated by Mr. Catherwood's genius to get across a very difficult subject in sometimes almost impossible conditions, the reader gets a wonderful glimpse not only at a myriad abandoned cities, but also at the customs of XIX century Mérida and Yucatec society in general on the very eve of the violent upheaval of the downtrodden Maya, which resulted in one of the longest wars in the Americas: the Caste War.This one-time bestseller continues to be an engrossing and entertaining read for anyone and a must for anybody interested in the Maya or XIX century life in the Yucatan peninsula.

I recently went to Yucatan and before leaving looked for my copy of this but couldn't find it. I ordered it from amazon when I returned and loved reading about places I had been. It is a great description of the area and what it took to travel there in thosebdays and is often funny. I recommend it.

Classic, with 19th century perspective.

The data of a scientist, about the Indians and their ancient ruins. I've been to a few of these ruins. Now I need to go there again. I would give it five stars if the Kindle version included the illustrations.

Interesting but a tough read. Not really so much about ruins.

Free Kindle Download. Need to finish it.

This and Vol II are a must read for any student of the Maya and a long standing reference, opens the door to the Maya world, excellent drawings by Catherwood. The early exploration of the Yucatan.
