Featured Recipe: Corn Cookies Yield 13 to 15 cookies 16 tablespoons or 2 sticks (225 g) butter, at room temperature 1-1/2 cups (300 g) sugar 1 egg 1-1⁄3 cups (225 g) flour 1/4 cup (45 g) corn flour 2/3 cup (65 g) freeze-dried corn powder 3/4 teaspoon (3 g) baking powder 1/4 teaspoon (1.5 g) baking soda 1-1/2 teaspoons (6 g) kosher salt Combine the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and cream together on medium-high for 2 to 3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, add the egg, and beat for 7 to 8 minutes. Reduce the mixer speed to low and add the flour, corn flour, corn powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix just until the dough comes together, no longer than 1 minute. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Using a 2 3/4-ounce ice cream scoop (or a 1⁄3-cup measure), portion out the dough onto a parchment-lined sheet pan. Pat the tops of the cookie dough domes flat. Wrap the sheet pan tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 1 week. Do not bake your cookies from room temperature--they will not bake properly. Heat the oven to 350°F. Arrange the chilled dough a minimum of 4 inches apart on parchment- or Silpat-lined sheet pans. Bake for 18 minutes. The cookies will puff, crackle, and spread. After 18 minutes, they should be faintly browned on the edges yet still bright yellow in the center; give them an extra minute if not. Cool the cookies completely on the sheet pans before transferring to a plate or to an airtight container for storage. At room temp, the cookies will keep fresh for 5 days; in the freezer, they will keep for 1 month.

I’ve been on a baking rampage since I got this book. I read it cover-to-cover & I’ve made 8 recipes so far. I normally don’t bother reviewing stuff (I know, I know..) but the negative reviews of this book are so ridiculous. People negatively reviewed because the recipes are too complicated & require special ingredients that cost money? What do you expect?! I’m sure happy Christina didn’t “dumb down” her recipes for this book. If you want a cheap easy recipe, go on Pinterest or buy a box of Betty Crocker… I want to be able to make the authentic desserts from Milk Bar, even if it means I have to buy a $12 roll of acetate and some fancy cake flour. If that’s how they do it at Milk bar, that’s what I want to attempt at home.I love how there are lots of textures in all of Christina’s recipes & great depth of flavor, not just sweet. I love how unusual and unique the recipes are – no boring snickerdoodles or devil’s food cake. I made the birthday cake & cereal milk ice cream for Father’s Day & what a hit! The cake seemed a little intimidating with 4 different components (the cake, the cake soak, the frosting, the cake crumb) but making it was very simple and not time-consuming as I envisioned. The cake is inspired by the funfetti cake mix but funfetti has nothing on this cake! This is my favorite cake I’ve ever had. No words describe how amazing it is & how impressive you’ll look showing up with a cake like this. It wasn’t even difficult to assemble. The cereal milk ice cream was very unusual but very delicious.Although the finished recipes have a lot of components, every recipe is explained so clearly that they’re practically fool-proof. To those negatively reviewing because your cookies didn’t come out: I seriously doubt you followed instructions. I’ve made 2 different batches of cookies (blueberry and cream cookies & confetti cookies) & both turned out AMAZING. Did you follow her instructions & use King Arthur bread flour? Mix the fats for 10 minutes until it wasn’t streaky? Refrigerate for at least an hour and go straight into the oven? I had zero issues following the clearly-explained methods. Every recipe I’ve made so far has turned out amazingly well & I look forward to working through the entire book.UPDATE:I’ve since made every single cake (some multiple times) and every ice cream recipe in this book. Any gathering or excuse I can find to make one of these cakes, I make one. Every single person rants and raves about how it’s the best cake they’ve ever had. I have a lot of books on ice cream, but Christina’s recipes are my absolute favorite. She uses gelatin instead of eggs, so you get a pure flavor of whatever the ice cream is (the graham ice cream is the best!).Again, to anyone thinking the recipes are too complicated or time-consuming: they’re not! If she says cream the ingredients for 3 minutes, then set a timer for THREE minutes! I’m no professional baker but I can follow instructions, and every single recipe I’ve made (over half the recipes in this book!) have turned out PHENOMENAL. Just follow Christina’s very simple instructions & you’re set! You don’t have to make everything in the same day. Sure, the cakes have 4-5 components to them, but that’s what makes them the greatest cakes you’ll ever taste. The two frostings most of the cakes have means more complex flavor & then the crumb adds a nice textural component. You can not only make some of the components in advance, but you can make the entire cake up to 2 weeks in advance! That’s what I love! You have to freeze the cake for a minimum of 5 hours to be able to remove the acetate, and you can keep it in the freezer up to 2 weeks! Normally, I would never freeze a fully assembled cake, but these turn out perfectly fresh – you can’t even tell it’s been frozen.I’m also obsessed with the assembly of these cakes! You bake it in a sheet pan & cut the 3 layers out with a cake ring. You use acetate to create the perfect layers – so easy with Christina’s clear instructions but SO striking!!This is 10000% my favorite cookbook EVER. I will definitely shed a tear when I’ve baked everything & I’m craving new recipes.

I love this cookbook so much! With 1 exception (it was my own mistake), every single thing I have made has turned out amazing. I'm seriously blowing the minds of all my friends. They always ask for the recipes when I make something from the cookbook and I've even started giving the cookbooks as gifts. It is very important, however, that you read through the section where Tosi describes the ingredients and the techniques. I am guessing that most people who have had problems with the recipes did not do this. I made several batches of cookies before I realized what she calls "flour" is actually BREAD flour. The cookies with regular flour still turned out great, but they were very thin and crunchy. This did not stop a single person from going to town on them though. Then I started using bread flour and everything came together. The cookies do not spread like crazy, they are crisped on the outside but chewy and soft in the middle. So read about the ingredients so you can get the best results!!I really do love this cookbook. The recipes are great but I also just love reading the stories and commentary. Some of the recipes call for some unique ingredients and have *a lot* of steps, but it's all pretty easy if you can plan everything out. For example, I start making the crack pie 2 days before I want it. I will make the oat cookie for the crust on day 1, finish making the pie and put it into the freezer on day 2, and then serve it on day 3. And it is SOOO worth it.

I only recently started baking and I think I'm addicted, thanks to the Momofuku Milkbar cookbook. I'm a 30ish mom, trained to work on the computer, not in the kitchen. The Milkbar book, with precise measurements and descriptions of how/why certain ingredients are used really helped me gain confidence and learn technique. After trying all the cookie recipes and a couple cakes, I went to the library and checked out all the baking books I could find. I have found a few other favorites, but Milkbar is still my #1. It is one of the only books that read well, cover to cover. It's a story of Tosi's inspiring career journey, with awesome recipes sprinkled in between. It's true, you can find a lot of these recipes online, as adapted by various food bloggers, and even on the Milkbar site itself. I tried the online Birthday cake recipe before I made the purchase and it came out okay. But after reading the book, I understood why she uses complex techniques and ingredients, and noticed how these reflect classic techniques found in other books. I liked that she gives two styles of measurements. I happened to have a $10 scale from my son's science fair project and started measuring by weight instead of cups. Who knew it would be easier AND cleaner! Measuring by weight is now my preferred method. I won't buy a cookbook without weight conversions. The subrecipes were a little off-putting at first, but when I realized that those can be interchanged with different flavors and added to other dishes, or even snacked on alone, it opened up so many explorative possibilities. I get tons of compliments on everything I've made from this book. People can't believe I didn't get them from some local trendy bakery. If you're looking to just try some recipes from this famous bakery in NYC, you can find them on the Milkbar website. If you're looking to try a new style of baking and a new way to think about how you work in the kitchen, click buy. (Or borrow it from the library, fall in love, then buy.)

Prague Essential Travel guideHis best advice - stay outside of the city!!! Go into the city for fun, tours, museums, food, etc. Consider eating outside the city!It is possible to get on the #22 tram or any of them going in the opposite direction. If you cannot read Czech, at least have a compass, used away from steel railroad tracks, to find north and south so you can catch your mistake. We used Apple iPhone and maps to solve the problem. Prague is a very big place and could be confusing without a very good map. We bought the 3 day pass which covers the trams, below ground metro, so ride with enthusiasm to even remote scattered sites. Skip taxi's except for a final luxurious ride back to airport with a private driver. Ask the hotel to arrange that. Hotel Adalbert was the best find. Go to neighborhood restaurants. Same good food as the larger tourist places and 1/2 price! Excellent beers, too. Avoid the tour groups and the ad-hoc tour groups. Follow the book and really enjoy this city.

This was perfect for our three-day trip to Prague. We tried a few of Rick Steve's customized walks to see different sights off the beaten path and a few of his locally-loved restaurant recommendations. The restaurants were fantastic, the walks were worthwhile, and his information never let us down. I'll be using Rick Steve's products again if we go on another European trip. In fact, I bought two extra copies of this book for two relatives who were visiting Prague in the near future.

Very useful and practical book. Steves can make your planning and sightseeing so much more fun because he cuts to the heart of what you need to know. Maybe a little more in-depth discussion of the artistic but often problematic cobblestone paving would have been useful to me (every sharp, pointy little cobblestone seemed to have my name on it; and the tram tracks are not exactly embedded into the surface level of the broader cobblestones of the streets.). His self-guided walking tours and restaurant recommendations are particularly useful. Take his advice about riding the trams for getting around and for seeing areas out of the tourist centers. Very instructive. The metro system is amazingly swift and runs on time. We found his advice particularly useful in exploring the Jewish Quarter for most of a day. If you have any knowledge of European Jewish life and history (and perhaps more importantly, if you don't), the Quarter and the "model" but very real concentration camp just outside the city will be a heart-stopping revelation. He tells you to pull out the book pages you need, rather than lug the whole book along for a specific destination. I supplemented his information with other books that go into greater depth about various locales and sights (and their names in Czech). His love of the history and culture is excellent and succinctly presented, and those sections will make your trip much more enjoyable.

I purchased Rick Steves Prague & The Czech Republic tour book as an addendum to the information I already had from the tour company with which I was travelling and for the few extra days I was staying in Prague after the tour. It served the purpose perfectly. The map within the book helped to view the relationship of the various neighborhoods in Prague: New Town, Old, Town, The Jewish Quarter, The Lesser Quarter and the Castle Quarter. The book helped to both enhance information I received from my guide and to remind me of what I had learned. Finally, it helped me to begin to understand the Czech money, because even though the Czech Republic is part of the European Union and the Euro is accepted in some places, for the most part, the Czech Koruna (Crown) is the most widely accepted form of money. The tour I was on took us to many towns outside of Prague in the Czech Republic. This guide book helped me to orient myself within the country. I highly recommend it.

(There are many reviews here; but I wanted to chime in with one for the Ninth Edition, since most are for older versions.)I am packing my bags to return home from Prague and plan to leave this for the next person in this apartment, so I thought I'd write a quick review. I wish I'd used the book more than I did, but the recommendations we used were top notch. (As I'm leaving and skimming through "what did I miss"?, I realize that yeah, just riding a tram such as 22 to get a feel for things would have been a great idea.)We stayed in Old Town, which is noisy but wonderful. And probably what I enjoyed most about Prague has been wandering around the crooked lanes and getting a little bit lost and stumbling on a nice place to eat and some David Cerny statues. Pick a direction to head and wander around... we spent several days with this strategy and just loved Prague to pieces. This is why we didn't end up picking up the book much. We never had a bad meal, for example, sometimes seeking out a particular place, but often just finding one.But of course, one wants to know the things "not to miss", so a book is helpful, as are the back stories and logistical tips, and I have really enjoyed this book for this.Food highlights for us included a splurge to eat at Hotel u Prince Terasa (thanks to Rick's advice), which was not as expensive as we'd feared. (About $120 US for two of us, with all the food we could want and many drinks as we sat their enjoying our lovely perch.) We also enjoyed the vegetarian Maitrea and Mjelnice... but really, everything was great, whether we sought it out or stumbled onto it.We used Rick's advice to pick the sights we wanted to see, as well as to decide to take a day trip to Cesky Krumlov.Anyway, great guide, and I recommend it to you.

I ordered this book from the seller BestStore4Books because it is the textbook that is being used with my graduate level quantum mechanics course next semester (Spring 2018), so I have not looked much at the material yet. I will update the review after next semester to discuss more about the material then, but for now I just wanted to comment on my initial perception of the quality of the international edition of the book. First off, I recommend international editions in general. They are far cheaper and the quality is typically enough to last at least one semester of traveling in your backpack and much longer after that sitting on your bookshelves. Also, for a back-up, you can almost always find a PDF through Google (this textbook, as other reviews have mentioned, actually has a free PDF made available by the publishers) and if you want to add extra protection to soft covers, you can cover them in clear contact paper which gives a similar protection as the clear covers added to soft covers in most libraries. Last semester (Fall 2017), I used international editions of the books Mathematical Methods for Physicists by Arfken, et al (published by Academic Press) and Classical Mechanics by Goldstein, et al (published by Pearson). In comparision, my first impression of this quantum mechanics book is that it seems slightly lower quality than those two international editions. The main areas where it seems to be lacking is that the cover seems slighly flimsier and the binding seems slightly weaker. However, I still think it will last the semester of traveling back and forth in my backpack. Also, oddly enough, from looking at the sides of the book the pages seem to be slightly different colors, unlike the other two international editions. (I have attached pictures for reference - the first is this quantum mechanics book, the second is the Arfken book, and the last is the Goldstein book.) Overall, though, I think there will not be much difference in use between this textbook and the other international editions, but my initial impression was that it is more cheaply made than the other two international editions. However, I would still recommend it since it is over $100 cheaper than the American edition. I will update this review after more use to comment on how well it actually stands up and also add information on the quality of the content later.

I received my text on time as promised by the vendor. This is an original by one of the MASTER PHYSICISTS; Dr. Eugen Merzbacher (SCIENCE HISTORY).

It's a great Quantum Mechanics book... Also, awesome service.

Great book, a classic.

Any student of QM would do well to read Schiff's book, third edition, His explanations are relatively brief, but profound and to the point. He shows a deep understanding of his subject.

One very very thick book!Merzbacher's Quantum Mechanics is not the most popular graduate text for QM; however, it is one of the options that some professors will choose. This text tries to be a very thorough study of quantum mechanics, but at times it is definitely very difficult to follow. Let's say we're looking to study topic A, and you turn to the index to look for it. You'll most likely find it in several different chapters, linked to different topics. The book also doesn't give enough information for you to solve the problems inside, maybe this is just because I am just not bright enough though...Nonetheless, it would be worthwhile to buy this book if you're taking a class that requests it. It's very difficult to navigate the book in an electronic form.Happy shopping! :>

It works.

It is completely new, I really got surprised!

This is a must read if you have ever considered buying into a partnership at an architecture firm. You owe it to yourself to do your homework and understand how the process works. Many young architects dream about hanging their shingle out but if you are unable to take that leap, the other way is to enter into a partnership or buy into a partnership at a firm.Understand the risks, and the ramifications.I have had my own sole proprietorship which I ran for seven years. I entered into several discussions with several small firms about becoming a partner but walked away from several of them because it wasn't much of a deal for me. I'm currently a principal at a larger firm. So take the time to read this cover to cover and then ask the right questions from the right financial consultants who know the field. If you do your homework, you will know the right time and value to make the right decision for yourself.

If you are either planning on selling your firm or buying into a firm I would recommend reading this book.

Brilliant.

The book is small, but filled with very good information presented in an easy to understand format. Well worth the price.

Useful book - we need an australian equivalent. Well structured and easy to understand. I would recommend to anyone undergoing such a process.

The Metropolitan Revolution: How Cities and Metros Are Fixing Our Broken Politics and Fragile Economy (Brookings Focus Book), by Bruce Katz

Review

“The Metropolitan Revolution upends conventional wisdom and makes the case for how our cities and metros are leading American change and progress: they are transforming our national economy, political conversation, and collective destiny from the bottom up like never before. A must-read for anyone working toward a brighter future for our cities and our nation.” —Mayor Cory Booker “The Metropolitan Revolution builds on twenty years of studying metropolitan areas and hundreds of thousands of miles traveling to them around the globe, and the result is an exciting guide to the new world economy - urban, networked, innovative, collaborative, and driven by human potential.” —Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Henry G. Cisneros “Being mayor of Chicago is the best job I’ve ever had in public life. Katz and Bradley totally get it: the real power to change America lies in our cities and metros.” —Mayor Rahm Emanuel   “With paralysis in Washington, public policy solutions will come from successful metropolitan regions, the clinical trials of our future. We are well into this journey, but never has it been explained with such insight and analysis until The Metropolitan Revolution.” —Governor Jon Huntsman “Just when ‘by the people, for the people’ seems like an anachronism, cities are giving it new meaning, fueled by twenty-first century technology. Every citizen needs to understand the metropolitan revolution. If we change cities, we change the country.” —Jennifer Pahlka, Founder and Executive Director, Code for America “This book captures the energy and excitement bubbling up in cities across America. This is ‘do it yourself’ urbanism of the highest order, and it is altering our landscape and our country.” —Janette Sadik-Khan, Commissioner, New York City Department of Transportation “Through real-world examples, The Metropolitan Revolution brings to life how America's cities and suburbs drive innovation to solve problems and seize opportunities.  This book is a call to action beyond Washington, where metro leaders join together and simply get stuff done.” —Mayor Scott Smith “The Metropolitan Revolution is compelling reading on how our federal system is a powerful advantage in global competitiveness. This book is indispensable for business and elected leaders on realizing the economic potential of metropolitan areas for their citizens and the country.” —Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin

Some of the examples were interesting but I would imagine there are others and the later chapters didn't compare well to the early ones.

This book, aside from providing confirmation to an idea for an initiative, provides inspiration for us - non political people - to take charge in changing the economic course of our own cities. The future lies (as it should) in the hands of the private sector, through entrepreneurial activity, as the economic leading engines of any urban area. I say, let politicians be administrators and allow for true leaders to rise and in an effort of many key players, build... build a future that can barely be dreamt yet.I highly recommend this book as a must read for anyone not yet ready to throw in the towel.

Really enjoyed this book. Did a great job of offering a series of eclectic examples of how cities are being situated as the nexus of economic growth in the U.S.

This is a good read on understanding some of the economic transformation taken place at both state and federal level, and the new landscape of our new economy. Overall, good book for everyone, but for college students..

Katz and Bradley posit that with gridlock in Washington, it's up to metropolitan areas to heal themselves, in part by cooperating instead of competing with one another. They show examples of metropolitan areas picking themselves up by their own bootstraps. Of course, all this power can be used for good or for ill....

I am reading a great book (on my Kindle app I put on my tablet) called 'The Metropolitan Revolution.' While the title of the book says Metropolitan the book really applies to regions where more than one city or group of small cities and rural areas are in collaboration for the greater good. His essential premise is the cavalry is not coming to our cities, towns or rural areas (by cavalry he means state/federal government or old industry giants). He writes about and uses many great examples of regional collaborations whereby diverse elements, previously stationed in their silos are now working together, across political, geographic and sector boarders and making sustainable economic growth happen.

This book does a good job of detailing an evolving community societal model whereby varied individuals with varying skills but sharing a common passion can be melded into an active and very productive business community. Some great examples of this model being developed in major U.S. cities are provided. An interesting read providing insight into the future of "Co-Op" business entrepreneurship....LS

A remarkably apposite book in these difficult times. The common thread is cooperation among organizations (businesses, non-profits, local governments, etc) which once competed. Simply put, in today's economic environment, metropolitan areas can achieve far more through cooperation within themselves because then "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts". Another key conclusion is that solving the problems takes time - think 10, 15, 20 years or more. The authors also make the valuable point that neither state governments nor the federal government are going to solve a particular area's problems. They may provide funding but little else. This book is not a recipe for solving a specific area's problems but it provides a framework for developing a solution.

Modern Masters Volume 7: John Byrne, by Eric Nolen-Weathington

From Booklist

With his work on Marvel Comics' X-Men and Fantastic Four and subsequent revamping of Superman for DC, John Byrne became the most popular comic-book artist of the 1980s. Nothing he's done in the two decades since, from stints with such established characters as Sub-Mariner and Wonder Woman to original creations the Next Men and Lab Rats, has made a similar impact. He retains a loyal fan base, though, which follows his every move. In a book-length interview, -Byrne retraces his career, from fascination with American superhero comics while growing up in Canada to current disillusionment with the industry. The accompanying black-and-white art--comics pages, rough sketches, and other rare drawings--shows how ideally suited Byrne's action-packed, character-driven style is to the superhero genre to which he has confined himself near totally throughout his career. Though Byrne's luster has dimmed, his enthusiasts will relish this tribute, as will other longtime comics readers who fondly remember his 1980s work. Modern Masters is a series of books that feature interviews and artwork from the greatest "masters" of comic book art. Volume 7 is dedicated to John Byrne. Now, when I was kid, there was nothing I loved more than comic books. I was a Marvel guy, and I especially liked Spider-Man. Then one day, for some reason, I picked up an issue of Iron Fist and I was compelled to buy it. It was issue #12 and had never read Iron Fist before, but he was fighting Captain America on the cover, and I loved a good super hero throw down, so I decided to give it a look. For some reason I bought it, there was something about that book that I liked, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it at the time. I later realized that what I loved so much about that comic wasn't the fight between Cap and Iron Fist... it was the ART! That was the first time that I ever really bothered to check and see who drew the comic book I was reading. That artist was, of course, John Byrne. After that I bought anything that Mr. Byrne drew... Marvel Team-Up, The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Superman, etc., etc.. To me, anything that John Byrne touched, turned to gold. He was, and remains, arguably the greatest comic book artist of all time. Jack Kirby is a legend, but John Byrne was comic's first rock star. Everyone I knew that read comics, loved Byrne. One of the things that made him so great was that he was one of the first artists to draw every character the way they should be drawn as individuals. Most other artists (John Romita, John Buscema, etc.) seemed to have a "standard" body for all the characters they drew, so that Captain America, Daredevil, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and so on, all had the same height and build. But not Byrne. When he drew his characters each one had a distinct body type. For example, his Spider-Man was thin and agile looking, his Captain America was tall and muscular, his Daredevil was somewhere in between the two, etc. Basically the man changed the standard of comic art forever, and in a small way this book helps commemorate some of his contributions to the medium. So, if you are a fan of John Byrne, or a fan of great comic art, you will like this book. Buy it!!! It's not even that expensive. It's a great deal. Buy it now!

It's great to finally have another trade retrospective of John Byrne's work; the last was "The Art of John Byrne: Volume 1" back in the mythical year of 1980. For those of you who have become parents since then, you'll be happy to know that this new book is for all ages -- and what a book. It's unfortunate that nowadays "fanboys" like to kick around artists/creators they deem uncool (that is, men who don't draw R-rated, semi-nude women and over-muscled grotesques), and Byrne has suffered his share of this negativity. Those coming upon his work for the first time in this book have every right to be puzzled by this as his work in the last few years (using the "full pencil" technique) is as stunning as anything he's ever done. Make sure you check for the pre-inked image of Superman carrying Lois Lane over the Great Wall of China at sunrise (or sunset?) for an example of this. The interviews that comprise the book are candid, honest and engaging. Jon B. Cooke does a good job asking questions that lead to detailed answers. I could wax rhapsodic all day over the images as they comprise his entire career; it's a special kick seeing all these characters from Alpha Flight to the Next Men in the pages of book; it's a family reunion, of sorts. My only complaint is the lack of any color galleries, but this is no way detracts from the book and it's cool enough that we do get a brand new color cover image of the Fantastic Four, a team Byrne wrote and drew in a now legendary run in the 1980s. Buy it, read it, enjoy it, re-read it, share it, then buy another copy; this is my favorite entry in the Modern Masters series so far.

This book is exactly what I'd hoped for... every single page is completely packed with John Byrne interviews (rather than others talking *about* John Byrne) and drawings. No ups, no extras. I'm sure a more expensive format would better showcase Byrne's artwork, but for me, this book is perfect. Now, bring on the Neal Adams version (as long as he's not allowed to talk about the planet swelling).

Great collection of Byrne's work as well as an interesting interview throughout.

Excellent
