About the Author

Alex Grey was born in Columbus, Ohio. He first attended the Columbus College of Art and Design and then studied with the conceptual artist Jay Jaroslav at the Boston Museum School, where he met his wife, artist Allyson Rymland Grey. During this period he had a series of entheogenically induced mystical experiences that transformed his agnostic existentialism to a radical transcendentalism. Grey spent five years at Harvard Medical School working in the anatomy department, studying the body and preparing cadavers for dissection. He also worked at Harvard's Department of Mind/Body Medicine with Dr. Herbert Benson and Dr. Joan Borysenko, conducting scientific experiments to investigate subtle healing energies. Grey is the author of Transfigurations, Sacred Mirrors, and The Mission of Art. His work has graced the album covers of Tool, Nirvana, and the Beastie Boys, and has been exhibited around the world.

The primary question I asked myself when buying this was that what could I get from this book that I couldn't get from searching things on the internet?After reading the book, I know that it has a certain value that the internet does not replace.First, it compiles hundred of interesting answers to questions that I might not have posed in the first place.Second, it presents information through thoughtful essays. These essays allow me to absorb information better than most Wikipedia articles would since they are very well written and to the point.Third, the questions are ordered by length. For example, question nine is "Who were the three sons of Noah?" and question 89 is "What are the 12 main branches of the Indo-European language family?". You can slowly build up the number of items you remember in this way.I would recommend this book for any fan of trivia looking to carefully absorb new information.

This is a clever little volume which, for the most part, I enjoyed. Essentially, it is 101 questions (see the title for an example) with answers provided in short, generally engaging essays. For a triviophile like myself, it provided a lot of interesting stuff, though it's not really a book to be read straight through. Instead, taking a few questions a night should prevent information overload.In addition, the book does have a few weakness. First, there is the unavoidable one of the selection of questions. Depending on your tastes, some questions will likely be less interesting than others. Also, the authors have the occasional tendency to throw in a judgement with their answers which can rankle, especially in the religious realm. Finally, there is the feeling that some of the questions are a bit of a stretch, shaped to fit the format the authors have chosen.Still, I don't get the sense that the book is meant to be a reference work. It is meant to be an engaging exploration of a potpourri of interesting questions. In that respect, it works quite well.

This fun book contains a hundred and one lists organized by number. For example, the chapter known as "Four" includes the following: What are the four voyages of Lemuel Gulliver? What are the four conic sections? What are the four sections of a symphony orchestra? etc.Chapters are: Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen, Fifteen, Eighteen, Twenty and Twenty-Four. What makes the book more than just a quiz generator is the lengthy explanatory text, anywhere from three to eighteen pages. These pithy essays entertain and inform, and add greatly to the volume's enjoyment. Some questions are really obscure -- what were the five rivers of the classical underworld, anyway? -- but even the easier ones can leave you scratching your head and cursing your memory. Didn't I used to know all this stuff? Then, after you knock yourself on the head and shout "Of course!", you will have the pleasure of reading a well-written essay by a co-author or one of a small number of contributors.There is also a fourteen page suggested reading list, organized by subject, that includes music and URLs. Rounded out with a good index, this is very nicely done and lots of fun.

I love this book. It contains short, succinct explanations for questions about topics that you may have missed in your formal education. I've found it to be a great coffee table book. Not only does it lend itself to fun discussions with guests, it often gets picked-up when there's a spare moment with a glass of wine.

I currently own 3 copies so I can always have one on hand. Excellent choice for learned league, quizbowl, or trivia aficionados! Trivia geeks, rejoice!

The book itself is in find condition, however I thought I would be getting a book about the Seven Wonders of the World but it has only a small portion about the wonders. Most of the book is about other "7's".

I ended up donating this book, it wasn't what I expected. fast shipping, and a great price.

About the Author

Richard Kurin serves as the Smithsonian Institution's Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture, with responsibility for most of its museums and many of its educational programs. He is an anthropologist and cultural historian, a former Fulbright fellow with a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He is the author of several books, including Hope Diamond: The Legendary History of a Cursed Gem, and his scholarship and museological work have been recognized by the International Council of Museums, UNESCO, and Harvard's Peabody Museum. Awarded the Smithsonian Secretary's Gold Medal for Exceptional Service, he represents the Smithsonian on the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the White House Historical Association, and numerous other boards.

This is an extremely fun coffee-table book that's not just for history buffs! It's an accessible look into American History that's perfect for teens through adults. My 7-year-old nephew even loves it - there are certain portions he's asked us to read to him more than once. Though I bought it for myself, it would also make a great gift. As I have this book sitting out, a multitude of family and friends (and friends of friends, etc.) have leafed through it and all of them have liked it, so it would even be a good gift for some you don't know all that well! Highly recommended!

I am about halfway through the book and am enjoying it very much. However, it is not just the history. I realize that it gives an emerging description of the American Character like no other book I have ever read. You can gaze at each object in detail, consider the respective narrative, and what comes through is a value base--i.e., what is held dearly-- which is distinctly American. I think this is shaped not only by what is gained ("manifest destiny") but by what is lost (the passenger pigeon and near-extinction of the buffalo).

This book will spark the interest of just about anybody. There are so many articles displayed in this book including the history behind the articles that it will occupy much of your time and reading enjoyment.Its a book you can place on a table top, and read at your pleasure or skip through and find a certain object in no particular order. I've had this book for about a week now and I've read just read about 2 objects. I've put the book aside for now, and the next day I want to sit and relax and learn a little something more about our history I will pick this book up and continue my read. I look forward to that very much.I will note that the photographs are very well presented, as also the text. Job well done Mr Kurin!

Purchased this as a gift for one of my home care patients who loves any book about history or museums. The book was in pristine condition and the recipient is absolutely thrilled with it. I enjoyed leafing thru the book before gifting it as well. Great pictures and descriptions.

My husband and I fell in love with this book during a trip to the Smithsonian museums. The book is filled with an immense amount of information which is presented in a fascinating, readable way. It brought back wonderful memories of our trip too. The photos are gorgeous and a perfect complement to the information being presented. The books has sturdy binding and stout construction.

Kurin has written a very interesting series of articles about these 101 objects and how they relate to the history of America. It's a brilliant and engaging analysis, well worth the cost and the strength to hold it in your lap.

I bought three copies of this book as Christmas gifts. I thought the premise was interesting and challenging--to portray the whole history of America in 101 objects. Maybe some events were dealt with rather superficially, but I had to keep in mind the goal and the limitations of utilizing only objects in the Smithsonian. All in all a good reminder of where we've been as a country.

Fabulous. The first page I opened to was Louis Armstrong's trumpet. Then the moon rock, and Neil Armstrong's space suit. Glossy, heavy weight pages, high quality photography. This is a great quality book, well detailed, fascinating reading to fill in the bits and pieces of time in a day.

I loved this book. The reflections of these two geologists pre-sage our 21st century understanding of evolutionary developmental biology. I grew up in a hunting family and have studied natural history all my life. The Namib is the one most formidable places on Earth. I laughed many times at how God protects fools and little children as these two men struggled with survival in the wilderness.Reading this book is also sobering when one considers the level of habitat degradation due to human activities that has happened since their account. My complaint is with the publishers. Anytime the text started a word with "cl" it was changed to "d." Some passages were rendered completely nonsensical and/or unreadable. That is a great shame. I guess I will look for a paper copy in a rare book store.

To the south a sand storm was raging and the dunes were covered with a reddish mist."I read about their experiences at waterholes where animals I had only seen in picture books or at a zoo were gathered to slake their thirst, sometimes communally, with natural predators next to them. Gemsbok, springbok, klipspringer, herds of zebra, ostriches, leopards, jackals and hyenas are sympathetically and adventurously described under exotic skies and shadowy rock formations. The author and his friend fabricate houses out of meager resources: mud, rocks and tamarisk. They live in caves and fashion there own tools. Together they speculate about the geological transformations in the topography. They philosophize about the evolution of Man and reasons behind war. When we were sitting in wait early on the first morning a male ostrich came down the opposite side of the valley with a couple of hens. The book's text content by the great geologist Henno Martin is a spectacular piece of desert writing, but this particular edition (with the clock on the cover) is VERY disappointing--the photographic plates are highly pixelated scans of the original sketches and basically worthless. It would be comical if one had only paid a few dollars, but at the over-$20 list price here, it's farcical. If you're thinking of buying this book in advance of a trip to Namibia, it's much better to wait until you arrive in southern Africa, where you can find good editions on sale in all major bookstores.

A great book and humbling to read about what must have been such an incredible experience. I found it well written. My poor stars are actually for the publishers. Errors in spelling, missing words, words without meaning that seem made up, paragraphs just...missing, bad translation. Terrible. I would think most could be caused by poor OCR, but to not proof read after that process is crazy. I was amazed that any publishing house would put their name to this. Its really bad. I'm not going to ask Amazon for my money back. But I hope someone is able to do something about it

Enjoyed reading about their experiences and learning about the fauna and flora. Not a gripping read but interesting enough to finish. Kindle edition had lots of errors to read around. For example, what does this mean? "We cocked a snook at them, but they didn’t understand that, and Otto barked furiously." (Loc 3521)

This is an excellent, important, and valuable book. I am thankful to have been able to find a reprint, however, the quality of this reprint is very disappointing. The resolution of the photographic reproduction process is low, resulting in fuzzy, ragged-edged print and photographs that are absolutely undecipherable. A reprint of this quality would be reasonable at a lower price. Since the photos were taken by the author, they are an important, and missing, part of the experience. You may be better suited looking for an original print edition from your library system.

Rather than being put in a detention camp, two German geologists in Namibia during WWII, spent two and a half years surviving in the desert wilderness. They drove in an all terrain vehicle to a remote area, bringing with them flour, oatmeal, beans, jam, and dried fruit. They had a shot gun and a pistol to kill wild game, the preferred meat being gemsbok, now called oryx. It tells of learning survival skills, moving camp three times, worrying about being found by authorities. The author also writes of the thrill of living in nature, the beauty of sunsets and stars, He and his partner also discuss evolution and question the survival of the fittest theory, believing that cooperation with others might be a more important factor in survival. I enjoyed this book very much. PH

This book is in the public domain so and no longer available in bookstores. I read it years ago and enjoyed it so much that I looked for it in English. Apparently it's available in the original German. Pictures didn't copy at all...distorted. I enjoyed it as much the second time as the first reading!

This book was amazing. Anyone who read the "I am Number Four" series will enjoy this spin-off. It answeres the question of what happens next that often haunt you after reading a good series. The character development was exquisite, making main characters out of some of the minor characters from "United as One". I am reinvested into a whole new story line in a world i previously fell in love with, thank you

Unlike the Lorien Legacies there isn’t any looming danger of a murderous hunt. Nor is there a threat of human destruction. Instead, there is an enemy with unknown intentions. Legacies are on both sides; good and evil.The Rambam writes that our imaginations can’t stretch beyond our experiences. Any new conception is just a combination of their varieties. Extra-ordinary prowess or super powers projected upon fictional characters are mere extreme examples of proclivities or facets of our strengths that we posses inside the recesses of our personalities. Any super-hero, legacies, or X-Men-esk story that doesn’t explore this theme can be very boring. Human nature is more interesting than any physical manifestation.This is what this book is about.The chapters focus on each individual’s experiences. But, unlike in the Lorien Legacies, they are recounted from the author’s perspective.Would’ve given it five stars. But, frankly, it took to long to get into it. It seemed that the development of characters was an aside from the actual story.

Pitticus, does it again... new characters, a new twist and even a brief glimpse of Number 4 seeing Taylor and flashing back to Sarah... I wanted to give a 5 star rating but, "I Am Number Four"... Bas Mallaichte,!!!They did make a movie from it.. although, the inaccuracies in the movie strayed too far from the book and killed the expansion... But, Generation One... is in 2 words.. A Victory!!!

I didnt think it was possible to follow up that last book and to launch into fairly new characters. I thought Pittacus had explored all the plot twists in the first segment of books. This one blew my expectations out of the water. So excited for the next one.

This is the second generation of the original series, with new main characters. I enjoyed the original series immensely, and this is a good enough sequel. Not great, but good enough for those of us who wish the Lorien series to continue.

Having read all of this authors novels to date, I must say that this is by far the best. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, the pace, and the characters. I'm excited to see if this trend continues. A fun story, with enjoyable well developed characters, a fast pace, moments of genuine humor, as well nail biting suspense and action. Can't wait to read the next installment!

I found the I am Number 4 series too long to conclude. Continuing it in this way made it feel fresh. The new characters and the new legacies have my interest. I look forward to the next installment. I do hope it isn't drawn out as long. Great potential with the new story line!

This was another great and action packed read for fans of the Lorien Legacy books. This is really a continuation of the last Lorien Legacy book and even features cameo appearances from John and Nine. I'd imagine other Loric will turn up for a chapter in future books (after all, they are meant to lead the Earth Garde). This is definitely an x-men designed book where super-powered humans are now fighting each other, similar to the x-men and the Brotherhood of evil mutants. It will be interesting to see where this leads. My wish is that the novels were longer. I realize the author is setting up for future books to carry more character development, but there were definitely instances where I felt disconnected to the characters because there weren't enough pages dedicated to building up their stories. Overall, great and fun read.

I'm not sure my baby daughter will enjoy the image of birds behind bars. Why this particular picture made its way into an image book for very small children is beyond me.

This book provides an excellent insight in the various elements of human behaviour into the financial markets. It brings together elements of academic studies from both authors and they have proven their worth in the financial and real estate markets (any type of asset). The concepts have a clear pragmatic element and with this book Akerlof and Shiller succeed in popularising their models and academic research. Somehow the reader is left with a feeling that they tried to fit the different parts into one book leaving the reader a bit puzzled when moving from one chapter to another. The book has a bit of an awkward feeling but that does not take away the valuable lessons and insights. By now the elements and details of financial crises of the last decade are fading into the past. The lessons, rightfully, should not and that is the true value of this book.

Well written book that shed lights on the economical issues from a macroeconomic perspective, with the notion of 'animal spirit' and how it influences a person's thinking in common business activities. Wish to have read this book before actually pursuing my MBA degree, nevertheless it left unconventional thoughts that wouldn't be taught in a classroom.

What Keynes means by 'animal spirits' is made a lot clear by the authors. They identified five types of human mental states that constitute animal spirits in humans. The notion of animal spirits is particularly useful in explaining the boom-burst cycles in capitalism and rampant corruption in autocratic states. However, for the sake of completeness, I think the authors should endeavour to embed the concept of animal spirits in human self-interest so that the discussion is more in line with mainstream economics.

I really got a lot out of this book. For one thing, I learned the oddities of how economists look at the world due to how economics is taught these days. Wow! I was surprised at the major lack of common sense that seems to trouble the field. No wonder few economists forecasted the 2008 Recession. I also learned a lot more about economics and some of the key factors that drive the economy. I'd read quite a few books about economics before reading Animal Spirits; it's not the first book you should read about economics. But if you're pretty well oriented to economic terms and views, this book injects a lot of common sense into the field of economics. It's by world class economists, including one who won a Nobel Prize in economics. I hope that this will be a seminal book in directing the field of economics into more successful approaches.
