This volume is chock full of recipes of 'shack' food I've become all tooooo (!) familiar with since moving north.There were some familiar dishes and more delectable recipes that WILL be finding their way to my outdoor parties!I ordered the hardback and expected a thin overview of shack food but was pleased by the abundance of ideas, sprinkled with a minimum of photos ( I don't need a picture book when cooking, just good input from chefs more knowledgeable ).Descriptions and menus are clear and concise with good reference to alternating pages to complete a meal.This is a volume well worth your money if you love or have an interest in the New England shore food experience.

I've been a fan of Jasper White's for many years, but I held off ordering this book because I was afraid it would be full of lobster recipes. I realized long ago that I was not going to pay the premimun lobster demands in the south, so why buy another book heavy on lobster. Well, I was wrong! This is a terrific book of seafood recipes and side dish ideas too. The thing I liked best is that all the food is very casual, not the fancy stuff that looks great on the cover but that you'll never cook. The fish recipes offer ideas for substitutions if the ideal fish isn't in season or region.

This is a great cook book. So glad I ordered it!

After visitng Boston area we had the opportunity to eat at the Summer Shack. It was a 4 star experience. Living in Alaska we are not new to seafood, but the receipes in this book add a wonderful compliment to different styles of preparing seafood. The sauces are fantastic and the lobster, while not an Alaskan dish, was the best I had ever had! Alaskan Golden King Crab does work well in these receipes.Just a nice cook book that Jasper White shares some inside truths in preparing excellent seafood dishes.

I have a wonderful cookbook collection and this book is a nice addition. In addition to good recipes, it is a great reference book for information on equipment, cooking techniques, background information on various shellfish, etc. The only thing that holds me back from giving it five stars is that I wish it had more color photographs. I know this probably adds to the cost of the book, but color photos really add to the appeal of a cookbook, and it's one of the things I look for when considering a purchase.

"An Essay on Free Will" is the best book ever written on the subject of free will. Van Inwagen presents the best arguments for and against compatibilism, the thesis that free will is compatible with determinism. He concludes that this thesis is false. Subsequently, he argues that we have free will, and thus that determinism is false. The book also includes arguments against fatalism and the principle of sufficient reason.Very roughly, the argument for incompatibilism is that if determinism is true, then our acts are determined by events in the distant past along with the laws of nature; since these factors are outside our control, if determinism is true, our acts are not ultimately up to us. Very roughly, the argument for the conclusion that we have free will is that we are not morally responsible unless we have free will; since we are morally responsible, we have free will.The book is clear and rigorous. Technical terms are defined and arguments are set forth carefully. Van Inwagen is patient with objections and the arguments of his opponents. He combines profound insight and a good dose of wit. This is a tour de force in analytic philosophy.The book does not presuppose familiarity with the problems of free will. However, it employs some logical symbolism, and I think that those unfamiliar with the techniques of analytic philosophy will find it very difficult.

Van Inwagen's first major work, the "Essay on Free Will" has in many ways revolutionized the free-will debate; terms like "compatibilism", "incompatibilism", "consequence argument", and so forth, central to today's debate on agency and freedom, were invented here. The book begins by explaining the issues involved--the problems associated with fatalism, arguments for compatibilism, arguments for incompatibilism, the consequences of our not having free will, and the "traditional problem", which is mainly the question of whether or not we have free will. Van Inwagen examines and criticizes fatalistic claims, criticizes arguments for compatibilism, argues at length for incompatibilism, and claims that lack of free will is incompatible with moral responsibility, and that the belief in free will is psychologically necessary for deliberation. He then gives reasons for thinking that we in fact have free will, and defends this claim against various objections, scientific and metaphysical. Among the most striking arguments of this part of the book is a disproof of the Principle of Sufficient Reason.This book is a treasure-trove of valuable insights on its chosen subject, clear, lucid, and impressively argued. It is worth any philosopher's careful time, but especially those who are interested in the free-will debate. The book does suffer, however, from a certain surliness of tone, and a certain persistent defensiveness, which to my mind is unwarranted and unseemly. These stylistic defects are minor, however, compared to its great philosophical merits.

I consider Peter van Inwagen's AN ESSAY ON FREE WILL to be the best book on the topic of free will, which is written by a single author. The book has six chapters, which are entitled:1. The problems and how we shall approach them.2. Fatalism.3. Three arguments for incompatibilism.4. Three arguments for compatibilism.5. What our not having free will would mean.6. The traditional problem.Van Inwagen sets out to answer two main questions in this book. First, the compatibility question, which is the question of whether free will is compatible or incompatible with determinism. Second, the traditional question, which is the question of whether we have free will.Chapter 2, on fatalism, analyzes arguments that tries to show, on purely logical grounds, that we have no free will. Van Inwagen argues, however, that they commit modal fallacies subtle and not so subtle and hence that such attempts to establish fatalism (and the nonexistence of free will) on purely logical grounds fail.In Chapter 3 he presents three arguments for incompatibility of free will--and he is happy to consider them as being three versions of the one argument for incompatibilism--and determinism. The most famous of the three is the third argument, which he dubbed 'the consequence argument' (CA). CA is an attempt to formalize the following intuitive argument:"If determinism is true, then our acts are the consequences of the laws of nature and events in the remote past. But it is not up to us what went on before we were born, and neither is it up to us what the laws of nature are. Therefore, the consequences of these things (including our present acts) are not up to us" (p. 56).Van Inwagen believes that the three arguments for incompatibilism that he presents are all good arguments (at least more reasonable than their denials) and, hence, by the end of chapter 3 he thinks he is justified in answering the compatibility question in the negative.In chapter 4 he presents three arguments for compatibilism: the paradigm case argument, the conditional analysis of 'can', and an argument that he calls 'the Mind argument' (MA) (so named because versions of it have appeared frequently in the philosophy journal MIND). Briefly, MA states that free will is not compatible with indeterminism, since free willed actions are rational and under the agent's control, whereas the injection of indeterminism (anywhere in the deliberation-volition-action sequence) would either destroy or greatly lessen such control and/or rationality.He believes that the most promising of the three is MA--more precisely, a 'third strand' of MA--which, interestingly, utilizes an inferential principle that is also found in CA (called Beta). Van Inwagen grants the validity of MA and is lead to deny one of its premises as false, although he confesses that he doesn't know *how* it can be false. He thinks that he is justified in holding on to the conclusion arrived at in chapter 3 because he argues that compatibilism is even more mysterious than incompatibilism--Van Inwagen thus ops for the lesser of two mysteries.Chapter 4 concludes with an argument that positing 'agent causation' will not help the incompatibilist to lessen the mystery that is posed by MA. Van Inwagen is thus something of a 'simple indeterminist' regarding free will.In chapter 5 he presents an argument to the effect that one could not deliberate if one truly and consistently believed that one has no free will. He charges that those who claim to deliberate but deny free will are guilty of a 'practical contradiction' of sorts. This argument has also received a lot of discussion in the subsequent literature, and it is considered (even by fellow libertarians) to be a mistake (cf. Randolph Clarke, LIBERTARIAN ACCOUNTS OF FREE WILL, p. 112).Finally, in chapter 6 he presents an argument for an affirmative answer to the traditional question: that free will exists because moral responsibility exists, and free will is a necessary condition for ascribing moral responsibility to people. In my opinion, this part of the book is perhaps the weakest, in that Van Inwagen spends far too little time defending moral realism against various skeptical attacks. I grant that he is not a specialist in ethics, but since he raised the issue--and since the issue is so crucial to the success of his overall project--I think that he should have been more careful here.The sixth chapter also contains some fascinating arguments about whether the truth of determinism can be established either rationally (e.g. through the principle of sufficient reason) or empirically (scientifically). He answers both in the negative.Thus, his overall conclusion is that (i) incompatibilism is true (his answer to the compatibility question) and that (ii) free will exists (his answer to the traditional question). Since the above conjunction entails the truth of libertarianism, Van Inwagen believes that he has shown that view to be true.In conclusion, anyone who wants to orient themselves to the issues and arguments of contemporary philosophical literature on free will should read this book. First published in 1983, it remains extremely influential in shaping the contours of the free will debate ever since.

Doesn't much matter which of those 557 pages fall open. Wherever you land you should find a good read. Here's a sampling: There's Nora, the thrice married New Yorker daughter of Hollywood screenwriters. Nora of 1960's Newsweek, when the only jobs open to women were in the mailroom. Nora, the New York Post journalist, novelist, filmmaker and playwright. Nora sitting around with Rob Reiner dithering with improving the script of "When Harry Met Sally." Nora settling scores with her unfaithful second husband in "Heartburn," the book that became a Meryl Streep movie. Nora as writer/director of "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless in Seattle." Nora, the foodie, on having people to dinner and life in the land of the egg-white omelette. And the Nora who knew early on who Deep Throat was, but nobody believed her. Nora and her profiles of Helen Gurley Brown, Julie Nixon Eisenhower and other well known women. Nora on life in the Google years. Nora on the "O" word and remembering nothing. Nora's script of "Lucky Guy," her 2-act play that ran on Broadway, starring Tom Hanks, in 2013. Nora's "Story of My Life in 3,500 Words or Less" and two one-page lists of "What I Won't Miss" and "What I Will Miss." Nora Ephron died of leukemia at 71 in June, 2012.

I have been a long time Nora Ephron fan, having read several of her shorter works, read screenplays and watched movies and this compilation of Ephron's work is a way to immerse myself in her brilliant, biting, insightful, sharp witted and intelligent writing. I enjoyed work I hadn't read before and revelled in re-reading favorites. She was such a creative and wide ranging talent- this collection is a treasure for me to dip into and reflect upon, laugh over and be surprised anew by her breadth of knowledge.

Nora Ephron is funny. Because she seeks the truth, after I've stopped laughing, I find myself oddly, deeply affected and a bit teared up. She left us too soon, so I'm glad I got this great, big fat compendium of her work from the many facets of her life--newspaper and magazine journalist, epic foodie, novelist, screenwriter, playwright. Somehow her love of eating and cooking works its way into a lot of what she's written as a novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. Her confiding tone makes her feel like a girlfriend, someone I stay in touch with long after moving on from the school or job where we first met.The Most of Nora Ephron gives me the opportunity to revisit Ephron's wit and warmth again and again.

This splendid collection of Nora Ephron's work should be read by every woman in America, and MOST men. Readers are not meant to read it straight through, but sample it as one would a box of chocolates. However, I read it over my Christmas vacation in one fell swoop, hating to put it down. Nora Ephron's death brought out a spasm of national mourning, and reading her work again, one can see why. She is often compared to Dorothy Parker, but it's a false analogy. Parker was cold at the heart; Ephron was warm and human all the way through. Read this!

I bought this as a gift for a bookworm friend of mine and she loved it. It is bulky and a bit heavy, but, it's beautifully written. Not a gift for posting but perfect to give to someone in-person who loves clever, witty, intelligent penmanship.

What more is there to say, other than that? Really. Sheer pleasure to read. This is the 2nd time Amazon has asked me this question, BTW. Please stop!

Nora Ephron was one of the funniest and best writers we have seen in a long time. No one had her keen sense of humor and ability to say something in her own original way. This book is a wonderful collection of Nora's work, and since there will be no more from her, it is to be treasured and read over and over. She was indeed a national treasure. Rest in peace, Nora, you made us laugh and you told it like it was.

Just can't get enough about the late Nora Ephron. Anyone who loves her films and books will love to hear how her process worked and how sensitive and loving she really was!

I love Eyewitness Guides and have been using them for years. The only reason I gave it four stars is that the pages are shiny and create a glare that makes it difficult to see under certain lights. Also, there's a lot of information packed in these books so the print is pretty small.

The guide was helpful once I arrived in Malta but less so for planning purposes. I would have liked more practical information like about tipping or that the bus system is great but never in time. The size of the book was perfect. I could always carry it with me.

This is a very nice little book that features the things that you'll want to see the first time around and also provides a couple of nice maps that you can take out and slip into your pocket. It goes into enough detail so that you have some idea what you're looking at, but not so much detail that you end up with a guidebook that makes you list to one side when you carry it in your bag. Everything was accurate and I found it a great help.

I like that it highlights key sights and other destinations from more mundane ones.

This book was easy to use, I referred to the pull out map frequently which was small enough to slip into my purse.

ok but would have been more useful as a combined book with some other nearby islands

My wife and I spent a week in Malta and this book traveled everyplace with us. Easy, quick and indispensable, the only way to see all the important parts of the Country.

OK for browsing, but not really useful for travelling. Many key details of when things are open, and how to get from one place to another in Malta are omitted. Few restaurant reviews.
