Normally I pass on the traditional DK series of travel guides, with their emphasis on suspense-destroying photos at the expense of content. But I LOVE this “top ten†concept! It is a brilliantly practical solution for tourists with limited time to decide which areas to visit in the “island continentâ€. The genius of the format is that it is not jut one, arbitrary ranking of ten highlights, but a series of them grouped according to themes, such as best beaches, hikes, museums, etc. written by someone with real local familiarity. There is even the inevitable suggested itinerary, but you can easily create your own with the information presented here. This is a concise, conveniently pocket-sized volume, so it does suffer from somewhat small illustrations and maps in the text, but there is a full-size road map in a pouch on the inside back cover. It is also not strong on dining or lodging recommendations, but in the internet age, I’ve always found it unfair and unnecessary to expect a print book to provide such information and be up-to-date. Travel guides are supposed to inspire and inform you enough to confidently make your own plans, and this one earns five stars for that! If you are into hiking, I would also highly recommend the Rother Walking Guide to Gran Canaria.
I can't imagine how I would have seen so much in 5 days without this book. It really emphasized the best things to see and the different regions to visit. I used it every day and found it to be packed full of useful information. I was not there for a beach vacation, but wanted to hike, visit historic places and cultural attractions, and also sample local cuisine. It was a great vacation!The only criticism I have is it could have more practical information about driving on the island. For example the roads (besides the highways) in Gran Canaria are very narrow, steep, and potentially dangerous. The book recommends driving to remote villages, but the reality is that even for a very confident driver (who drives stick in the US) the crazy hairpin turns and incredibly steep narrow roads were a challenge at times. I wish we had a warning about that. Maybe I missed it. You kind of need to drive to really see things off the beaten path, so I wish there were more tips for drivers.
