Statistics is notoriously difficult to learn from a book. Actually, it can be tough to learn from a teacher, especially if you don't have a background in mathematics.I've taken various classes on "statistics for managers" and "statistical methods for researchers" at two different Universities for three different degree programs (BS-CS, MS-IS, MBA), and this book was the highlight of all of them. This is one of only two books that I have retained over the years from my studies, and I actually acquired a second copy from a classmate just so I'd have a backup. It is /readable/. I can't stress enough how difficult most other statistics books are to slog through, and this one comparatively is a breeze. That's not to say that the statistics are dumbed down, because they're not -- it's the same statistical methods as many of the other textbooks I've read, but written in a much more clear, more entertaining, more readable way. You don't feel like you're reading a textbook - it's more a series of stories and examples explained through the lens of statistics, then with the mathematics clearly explained. This is not a book for statisticians. If you already have a Master's in statistics, you can safely skip this book, unless you really enjoy reading good statistics books, even if you already know all of it.On the other hand, if you've taken 0 - 3 statistics classes at some point in the last two decades and are looking to learn or refresh your memory, this is an excellent book. If you're looking for a solid overview of the statistical terminology and methods you'll encounter as a manager, again, this is an excellent book.
This book strikes the perfect balance of depth & breadth required for most middle management at Fortune 500 and/or tier 1 management consulting firms. I have friends in business school who were statisticians who enjoyed the book because of its real-life applications and great business oriented examples... for others (like myself) who wanted a broader take and deep enough understanding to know what to ask, what to look for, and what to challenge when looking analytical pieces of information, this book was fantastic.
It's a good book for introduction to statistics and it's most important tools. The math behind it is simple to understand and well suited for non-technical classes, like MBA. One or two subjects, for the sake of simplicity, ended up being a bit too shallow, limiting their usefulness in real world problems. Nonetheless, it's possibly one of the best books I've read for non-technical audiences.
This book was the course book for our MBA statistics course. While it is thorough and sound in its statistical teaching, its main strength lies in its ability to lead the student to a deeper understanding of the "why" behind the statistics. The book spends a significant amount of its pages hashing out good verses bad statistical practices, allowing the student to develop a discerning eye. As most students who take this course will go on to be managers, this skill is as important if not more so than the ability to be an individual contributor. I highly recommend this book for managers of statisticians or data scientists.
Having taken a statistics class in undergrad, I was loath to take it again for my MBA program, but this book made the subject engaging and interesting. Using vivid examples and even a bit of humor, this textbook made me view statistics in a new light in which I could apply its concepts to everyday life and didn't put you to sleep like the majority of other textbooks, on this subject or any other.
I bought this book for a class with the author. I like math but had never taken statistics before, so I was worried the material may be beyond me and it would be one of those cases that the book was gobledy-gook and I'd have to hope that the professor explained things clearer. Actually, the book was almost always perfectly clear on its own. The strength of the book is it's clear examples and graduated set of practice problems. Now graduated with my MBA, I still dig the book out every now and then for a quick refresh on hypothesis testing, simple regressions, or probability theory.
I STRONGLY recommend this book to any professional who, like me, is daunted by statistical concepts. The book dissects statistics to its essentials, and packages it in an easy-to-understand format. More importantly, it grounds the concepts in practical managerial scenarios. After reading the book, I've found myself having smarter conversations with colleagues about data, and consider this to be one of the most significant sources of knowledge in my recent professional development. Dare I say it, the book actually managed to make numbers fun!
I took the author's Quantitative Method's course and I still use the book as a reference. I am not a statistician, but I like to go beyond basic counts and incorporate more advanced analysis in my work, and this book has been a great resource. I love the way he describes topics, gives helpful and relevant examples, and provides shortcuts for how to simplify more complex analysis when your business case doesn't require absolute precision in your modeling.
