Taylor acknowledges that the popular notion of sin needs to be jettisoned -- it is itself sinful, you might say -- but not the fundamental concept of something being seriously wrong that needs to be righted and that the righting of it involves not just gradual improvement but a transformation of the human spirit that happens when we are in touch with the transcendent in a way that enables us to acknowledge that we've been out of touch with reality in a serious way. As long as we deny that there's anything wrong (recall John Cleese's "It's only a flesh wound"), then we will never seek or be open to a transformation of our fundamental life orientation (hence "Sin is our only hope"). When "sin" disappears from our vocabulary, then what is wrong gets explained in medical therapeutic terms (a "no fault" approach in which we are victims of external forces) or legal terms (an "all fault" approach in which we freely choose to make harmful decisions). Taylor argues that only a depth understanding of "sin" allows for the paradoxical nature of what we're talking about, for the complicity of ego and will in our refusal to acknowledge that anything is wrong, and for the hope of transformation -- not in any neat and simple sense, but in a deep and real sense nonetheless. If there's nothing wrong with you or your life or people who think like you do -- if it's everyone else in the world who's wrong -- then you can skip this book. But if you are among those who are not satisfied with overly simple medical and/or legal explanations of bad acting in our disjointed world and are willing to entertain the notion that in totally rejecting "the language of sin and salvation", we threw the baby out with the bathwater, you might find this a stimulating read.

Barbara Brown Taylor has never failed to give me new insights on an old subject. She does it again in Speaking of Sin. Very enjoyable reading, challenging questions, and down to earth wisdom inform, enlighten, and encourage readers to evaluate and reconsider ancient, traditional, and current understandings/misunderstandings of sin. History and traditions inform the present, which is informing the future now. As the author points out, many of us have avoided speaking of sin, and she offers a treasury of help in confronting the subject, and ourselves.

I am a big fan of authors who have the ability to express great ideas succinctly, and BBT once again proves herself to be masterful in this regard. This short read gets to the heart of one of the greatest problems with the church today, and I am going to be reccomending it to friends of all faith traditions.It only took a few hours to read, but I predict that I will be wrestling with the contents for the next few years, if not the rest of my life. Do yourself a favor and read it!

This book talks about the elimination of the word "sin" in our comtemporary language. She addresses what effect this has had on individuals and society. She has a powerful story to tell! I belong to a Unitarian Universalist Church and we practice a modern form of religion. We use wisdom of the past, science, sociology, current events, and our own personal experience to inform us. Due to our modern practice of religion, we have dropped religious language. I do believe in my faith's views and practices, but I think Barbara Taylor is on to something.

As always, so good. If you're uninitiated to BBTaylor, check out her sermons on YouTube. You'll know immediately that she has a way with words…..and ideas…..and important truths…… A rather short book -- loaded with content (as always) and a powerful, meaningful slant on sin. Without leaving you full of guilt -- just a burning desire to absorb the full implications of sin, confession, penance, and salvation.

To my mind and heart, Barbara brown Taylor is unsurpassed in exploring and elucidating the centralities of Christian faith. Without flourish, she cuts to the center of belief and the essentials of what it means to be a human being in search of truth. The only writer who comes to mind for me as a companion to Brown Taylor is Frederick Buechner. It was a blessed day for me when an acquaintance first mentioned her writings.

As I have come to expect from Brown Taylor, this slim little book is packed full of concepts that require me to slow down and think about what she is saying. I really enjoy the way she approaches a thought from several different angles."People hear the guilt coming and they leave the room. They are tired of being judged and threatened by Christians who say"love" and do fear."Also, after years of liberal-arts education, she gave me the most useful definition of "post-modern" I've ever seen:"My own working definition of it is that the modern age is over-the age in which we believed in the power of the state, or the academy, or the church to bring out the best in us. In the age just past, nationalism has brought us Hitler, science has brought us the atom bomb, and religion has brought us some really awful television programming, not to mention apartheid or the civil war in Northern Ireland. Humanity has turned out to he hard to perfect, and the old structures we relied on to do so have let us down.""The threat of sin and the promise of salvation sound too much like part of the old control mechanism for keeping people in line, which has failed even at the highest echelons of church leadership."Read if: You are interested in chewy and humane theological writing. I'd never been to the Keys and we used this as our travel guide in addition to Yelp reviews. My primary complaint about the Keys is that what they call "beaches" may be rocky, hard, and full of underwater growth. We visited a number of Key "beaches" and never found one anywhere near as good as those in Southern California. However, the ocean water in Florida is much warmer, which is nice.

Fodor's guides are very reliable for the causal tourist who isn't too adventurous, but still offers valuable information on a very easy to use format. Recommended!

Just went to Keys for a week, this guide helped a lot. contains much info without having to look stuff up online all the time

If you want to know about the history of empires then don’t feel hesitate to grab this awesome book. I heard about this last week from my best friend and as per his recommendation I didn’t forget to grab it right way.After reading it entirely I was super impressed and please as well because here I found lots of information about the Roman, American and British Empire. Basically inside of this book the author “Robert Dean” has described about the rise & fall of these greatest Empire’s history. This book helped me to enlarge my historical knowledge and I will definitely like to suggest this book to all kinds of readers but especially for history lovers & students.This is my honest opinion about this book and hope it will help you to understand about the quality of this book.

History of Empires is a short book written about the history of the Roman, American, and British Empires. It also covers Sparta and Babylon and their history. Since it is a short book, it is obvious that the content is not going to cover everything or at least won’t be able to cover things in detail, however, what it does do is provide a general and correct overview of each of the subject matters.I liked how everything was nicely laid out and structurally designed. The seven chapters are not filled with fluffy content and do have a nice flow to them. I was not a big fan of the long paragraphs and would have appreciated some breaks in between, to ease the eyes. Besides that, the book is a good intro for people that want to at least have some idea about past Empires.

What's better than reading a book which is not only historically correct, but very well-written and informative, as well? Maybe a foot massage while reading said book! The initial paragraph pulled me so far into focus, there was no turning back; begin an historical book about world empires by drawing on the obvious parallel of the Biblical book of Daniel and his dream vision of the statue which depicted world powers ... and I am paying attention! Not only was this book informative and historically correct, I felt the author had a firm grip on his storytelling ability. This will be a book which will remain in my Kindle for a long time and I plan to read it again.

This book briefly tells the stories of some of the most powerful empires in history: Babylon, Sparta, The Chinese Empire, The Ottoman Empire, The Roman Empire, The British Empire, and the US. The book is quite short, but very well-written, and serves as a good introduction to those who are not yet familiar with these subjects but want to learn something about them and/or to those who seek to expand their general knowledge.

It’s a short version of the history of empires. Each empire has about four pages to it. Like a 6th grader version for school.It’s a good introductory book for youngsters who are liking history-related subjects, or for adults who want to grasp it all quickly, in 1 hour. The whole book is like 58 pages in big letters.

He compares and contrasts the rise and decline of each, noting the inherent nature of empire. Readers will be inspired to further research and consideration.

I ordered the books for my brother he’s incarcerated and the facility wouldn’t let him have them :( so they were returned..I’m sure he would’ve loved them . Sad

This is the perfect book to get started flipping houses. It is comprehensive. It includes all the basic information you must learn to have a shot at being successful. It also goes into great detail on many aspects of flipping, including such important issues as when to schedule each phase of work during the renovation process. It isn't the last book you'll need to read, but after reading it, you'll want to get started flipping right away. You will feel ready. The answers to questions you have and even questions you didn't know you had are all in there. FLIP is the closest thing to having a mentor that you can get in a book. It doesn't sugar-coat the business by making it seem like it can be done without any effort, but it does show that by preparing properly (and this book is a great manual to help you prepare), absolutely anyone can flip houses. I did find myself wishing the book was an iPad App because there are so many links to their website. Rather than having to print out the checklists and forms from their website, a flipper could just pull them up on their iPad or tablet while on the job site. Perhaps they're working on an App...

I am about half way through this book and LOVE it. We have rehabbed many properties but are just now getting into flipping them and this has made me think of things I never would have thought of on my own!

I'm in the real estate business and have worked with people who thought they wanted to get into the flipping business. I read this book from cover to cover and then used the website referenced within. This book gives very concise, easy to understand, steps for every stage of flipping. There's so much more to it than just buying a house and fixing it up. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone considering this as an investment or hobby.

I thought flipping would be easy, but after reading the insights of this book I started to have a new appreciation for those individuals who do this for a living. The book educated me on the in's & out's of this business, and don't kid yourself this is a business. If you are not committed to Flipping you will be broke very quickly. The book itself prepares you for the Flipping process and offers useful tips. Good book for a beginner.

Made the mistake of spending $2K to go to a Scott Yancey three day workshop where I could have just purchased this book and learned how to flip from A - Z. I am 3/4 of the way through the book and they provide a step by step process from where to find the property, how to approach the seller, estimating repair costs, making the offer, etc. I recommend this book to read, re read and take notes.

Great book, highly recommend. Great for new investor looking for a jump start on their career!! I Am a seasoned real estate agent and found the information to be very informative! It is hard starting an investment portfolio and there are a lot of speed bumps, this book will help you navigate the waters.

First, I must say that this is so far the best book I have read on this subject. The authors seem to be very experienced and knowledgeable in the field of rehabbing homes. I am very pleased with what I got for $15 (or whatever I spent). I feel that with this book, I could successfully FLIP homes. My first primary home was a fixer upper, and I did pretty much all of the work myself. I turned a nice profit when I sold it, but I think that I could have done better had I known then what I know now.There was not a lot of information that was new to me, but the book did bring together a variety of related topics. Likewise, the authors presented a few smart systems for completing the project.The reason I gave this book only 4 stars is that I don't like the writing style of the authors. This book could have easily been 150 pages or less. The font was a little big, and there was WAY too much worthless text, random anecdotes, and stupid analogies. One page in particular was about Punxsutawney Phil...it wasn't until the third or fourth paragraph that the author crafted some way of connecting that to flipping houses.Overall an excellent book worth every penny (the authors need to stick to flipping houses though). I wish I could get my friend who has recently jumped headlong into rehabbing houses to read this book...
