This is an appealing selection of old-fashioned, public domain horror stories by some of the best-known writers of their day in that genre. While many, if not most, of these tales have been heavily anthologized in numerous, previous horror collections, happily there were a few included here that I had never read before; discovering them and revisiting the others made this set worthwhile to me. The formatting is handsomely done and the active TOC permits direct access to all content. Overall, this is a very enjoyable anthology.NOTE: Everything I said (above) about volume 1 pertains to volumes 2 and 3 as well. Each contains mostly familiar tales but also includes a few less-common ones.
Unlike the other volumes, this one I mostly liked. If I exclude the tedious multichapter novellas (including Lovecraft's The Dunwitch Horror, not his best by all means), I was left with quite a few delightful stories. In the Table of contents order - The Ambitious Guest, though characterized by flowery antiquated prose, on the whole very good; excellent Caterpillars; absolutely delightful Gabriel-Ernest (on the par with Saki's other tongue in cheek horror stories like The Open Window and Great Vashtar); very good The Graveyard Rats; Kafka's unequalled In The Penal Colony; the fabulous classic The Monkey's Paw (got a shudder reading it perhaps for the fourth time); An Occurence At Owl Creek Bridge (though I am not a fan of Bierce); excellent piece of acerbic prose in The Shadows On The Wall; unforgettable Tell Tale Heart; and the very insightful The Thing In The Cellar. Alltogether several hours of pure terror - what a rare pleasure
Most of the stories are good, even great, but the typos are horrendous. Two in first sentence of House of Usher (and no epigraph), for example. If volume one is this bad, why read the rest? Classic example of careless kindle "editing."
Old fashion horror without blood and guts. More creepy than most graphic modern horror stories.
Excellent anthology of classic horror stories. Highly recommended for those who love vintage horror. Many old favorites and surprisingly new stories from beloved authors.
