As an infectious disease epidemiologist, I know a thing or two about the emergence of antibiotic resistance. As such, I was eager to read this book. I was delighted and surprised to learn a few things, including the backstories of outbreaks that I had learned about as a student decades ago. Several of the public health researchers involved in the cases described are people I know and have worked with, and I can say that the author captured their very essence.Apart from my profession, I am also the wife of a man who acquired a superbug infection and spent 9 months in the hospital, after suffering 7 episodes of sepsis. His superbug was resistant to all antibiotics, even those of last resort, like colistin. His survival is nothing short of a miracle. Superbug infections like my husband's are no longer rare events, as this book will make you realize, in terms you will never forget. The public is largely unaware that the over-use of antibiotics among livestock is a major contributor to the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance, and I think this book will change that. But this book does more than just signal the alarm bell; it charts a course for solutions. And they address not just what farms, governments and companies can do to address this problem, but what YOU can do as a consumer. As an aspiring author, I marvel at how readable this book is. Maryn McKenna describes complex scientific phenomena, like plasmid-mediated resistance, in words non-scientists can understand, but in a way that is never patronizing. I predict that this is what publishers will soon refer to as a Big Book, and it will be assigned to students in various fields, not just microbiology, but public policy. And as readers, we get a front row seat.
Great science and history journalism through story telling. Not a dull moment as I followed chickens from the barnyard to the laboratory. I work in healthcare and antibiotic stewardship is a big deal, not so for the poultry industry. Voting with my dollars still matters and I'm proud of some of the companies who now demand antibiotic free birds. It's a disgusting industry and it doesn't need to be. McKenna found plenty of healthy chickens. Still steering clear of eating birds for awhile.
Very interesting and as one who has worked in the broiler industry for a long time, it is pretty much factual.
An excellent read, and a reaffirmation to buy all your food wisely-a scary reminder how one can be [unfortunately] connected to thecareless and far-flung practices and events in the current food productionand distribution system.(Seller SecondStoryBooks did excellent job protecting and shipping)
When we focus on superbugs and the threat antibiotic resistance poses to human health, we tend to focus on a few issues, like misuse of antibiotics or scary outbreaks. This book comes at the subject from a different angle- looking at antibiotics in the food supply and showing how scientists have slowly but surely proved that resistance in animals causes resistance in humans. With a nice blend of science, policy, history, and personal stories, McKenna synthesizes a wealth of information into a riveting series of stories. Unlike other popular science writers, she doesn't resort to dramatizing the risks we face, or dwelling on the worst case scenarios. Rather, this book is incredibly well researched and entertaining look at how we've perverted our food supply, what the future might look like if we take action now, and why it matters so much. Well done, I look forward to the sequel!
A great expose on the problems of our modern industrialized agriculture and animal husbandry. Also there are some eamples of not engaging in the industrialization giving us a thread of hope that change could happen to improve our food supply with foods that have taste, which has been breed out as the drive to create abnormal specimens to supply the market.
Tells the story with solid backup of the problems were are causing for ourselves by the way industrial farming is conducted.Names names and points out what are better ways to eat.A complete history of how the industry got to where it is today and what we can do.Very glad I read it
The story unfolds in such an interesting, intimate manner that this book was absolutely a page turner! I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in food, medicine, or a more sustainable future.
