I took pictures so you get a basic idea of how the books look/how detailed it is. It's very simple and beautiful book. Each subject has their own flaps(you can read about a tree, then close that flap and read about the mushroom and so on) My almost 2 year old loves this book and I believe it will grow well with him.The subjects include Plants(as pictured), Animals, Pond Life, Ground and Air(bugs that fly and bugs that crawl), Habitats(as pictured), and Baby Animals.

Beautiful!!! Only thing that I believe could make this better is that the (small) text blends in with the illustrated background due to color choice of text.

Super fun book! Teach your kids all about nature, go out and explore!

This book is beautifully illustrated and each one has just the right amount of info for toddlers. We love this book so much.

My grandson loves lift the flap and pop up books . This was a very nice book.Glad we added to his library.

We loved this book it’s beautiffly illustrated and simply written. We want oceans now too.

Beautiful book but the flaps were all attached to each other. The child I care for ripped several flaps trying to open them before we realized an adult needed to seperate the perforated flaps page by page for the entire book.

It seems... he's really the 'Armchair' economist. I mean that he've been stuck in academia and doesn't have enough real life experience. He makes lots of false claims only based on old economic theory. The theories seems elegant and very logical, but the problem is the underlying assumptions are usually overlooked and the author really overlooks in the book. Maybe he doesn't want to talk about that since it's not helpful to substantiate his false arguments. I bought this book for my microeconomics class, but I really wanted to return this book if not the class.

A fun book about how economic principles affect our daily lives. My first thought was that the author's style is very similar to Malcolm Gladwell's books such as "The Tipping Point," "Blink," etc.--entertaining, easy-to-read, but very insightful based on real life stories and examples. Even if you don't like economics, this is a great way to get some exposure to the field.

I'm a college student and usually do not enjoy the bland textbooks teachers assign. This book, however, was amazing! I kept it after the semester instead of selling it and read it again :) Really helped me gain an intelligent grasp on economics. I was able to meet Landsberg in Dallas a year ago and he was also the nicest person ever! Most economists and academics are so pretentious but he was so willing to answer my questions and discuss policy issues.

Easy to read, interesting, a bit dated in some of its references but not bad. Some of his conclusions are a bit unexpected: if you drop a dollar bill you should let it go as your microscopic contribution to fighting inflation. His rationale is carefully laid out, but all along you know it is a tongue-in-cheek exercise and at the end he admits to picking his dollar back up anyway. The book is full of short stories and scenarios like this one, fun to read and think about.

I nearly returned the book the very moment I received it after purchase and flipping through the pages. I thought I had the wrong book because it was part of the set of textbooks my Professor in Economics in Agribusiness recommended and as an economic textbook, the first thing I expected to see was the usual demand and supply curves and equations and because they were conspicuously missing I thought I had the wrong book.Indeed it was worth recommending and reading. This is a book that took Economics to the next level; making effort to present Economic theories to the non-economists. It touches on real life issues and written in plain and clear English without any economic jargon which may be difficult to read and understand by non-economists.The writer made great efforts to argue and dispute several misconceptions in life by applying the realities and economic principles. Some of arguments and concerns on some issues were quite controversial and appear to be based on value judgements. As a result, one may not fully agree with them based on one's values; but in general, it was an interesting reading.I took special interest on the Environmentalist discussion on chapter 24. In as much as it sounded quite controversial to read because of strong advocacy for environment and conservationism (which I am a member), I saw the argument to be a great and interesting one. Indeed "if environmentalists were as passionate as they claim to be about conserving resources for future generations, I would expect more of them to oppose the taxation of capital income, the social security system and other policies that encourage consumption in the present". I found this interesting because truly, sometimes some advocacy concepts only take a parochial and narrow view on issues and that in total effect end up not education the masses well. This not withstanding, there were other sections where issues were disputed but the author did not do much job to let the alternatives be very clear enough. An example is 'why popcorn cost more at the movies' on chapter 16. In this section, the author could not make it clear to my understanding what alternative approach could maximize profit for both popcorn and movie ticket sales. In general however, this is a great book to read.

It is a book that should be read to complement and with caution, not to be taken as a text book. There are very good essays, as very bad ones. The book distils an over-the-top market fundamentalism. At the same time it ignores the most correct theories about markets. When the author discusses inflation and interest rates it does not mention Mises (Austrian School) at all. The simplifications make a caricature of economic theory, which may indoctrinate the reader. It ignores the role of the policy maker, the role of government and society in building solid institutions that ensure proper market operation. It mockers and treats with utter disdain features such as the right of literacy and school initiatives to teach about the relevance of environment preservation. It is a good book if the reader is already relatively informed, because it is important to get to know other opinions and find common ground. But for a first contact with economics it could be damaging. The way the writer makes his point on species extinction is repulsive. The book attempts to make economics simples, but it makes it short sighted to say the least. Market fundamentalism is a fanatical religion that resist facts such as the entrepreneurial participation of the United States government seeding technologies like the internet, airspace; it overlooks South Korea development, and China's. Should the U.S. government slashes tuition financing, all those market fundamentalists would be forced to live closer to reality and write something about it. If really free markets come into existence one day, they would close economics departments across the country, laying off free market fundamentalists. Now that would be "efficiency".

Talk about receiving the right message at the right time. Wow. Big Magic is one of the most honest discussions about the creative process that I’ve ever read. Gilbert strikes a playful and conversational tone, but make no mistake, this is all straight talk. Her no-BS attitude helps do away with the unrealistic expectations and unnecessary melodrama attached to the concept of “creative living” (like how she so expertly pish-poshes the "tormented artist" ideal). And in its place, she asks all people who feel called to create (writers, painters, musicians, ice skaters, WHATEVER) to quietly and joyfully accept their creative inclinations and ideas as gifts from the universe. She reminds them to approach their creativity with curiosity and openness, with playfulness and joy—even when it’s tough, even when there is no Pulitzer, no bestseller list, no Olympic medal, no call from the Met. Own that creativity, she encourages. Also, stay light with it.This was the message I (apparently) desperately needed to hear. I’m a stay-at-home mom with three young children. And when people ask me what I do, that is what I always tell them. But that isn’t what I want to tell them. What I want to tell them—what I want to shout from the rooftops, in fact—is that I’m a writer. Sure, barely anyone reads what I write, I’ve never been published, and it probably goes without saying that I’ve never been paid for a single sentence. In other words, no one really gets anything out of my work but me. But I love it, straight up. So I keep writing, regardless.Yet it feels weird to declare yourself “A Something!” when that something doesn’t earn you money or status or likes or hits or retweets. Which means even though this side-passion feels so authentically “me,” I hide it so people won’t think I’m a loser, an imposter, a wannabe, an embarrassment, a failure…and the list goes on.I guess this reality had been bumming me out more than I realized, because when I read the following words, they resonated with me in an unimaginably powerful and loving way--like I was receiving a cosmic hug:“Shake yourself free of all your cumbersome ideas about what you require in order to become ‘creatively legitimate’… You do not need a permission slip from the principal’s office to live a creative life. Or if you do worry that you need a permission slip—THERE, I just gave it to you… Now go make something.”In other words, Gilbert’s message is this: accept that you need to create. Accept that this is a part of you, that you are ALREADY “creatively legitimate.” And just do what you naturally feel compelled to do. Do it with joy—even when it gets difficult—and don’t worry about how it will be received (if it’s received at all). If you are called to be a maker, then you will just have to make. Own who you are, for better or worse. So that’s what I’m doing from now on. I’m owning it. This is me stating my intent:Hello, world. My name is Ladybug. I am a writer.

Having read a few of the valid negative reviews, I want to start by talking about what this book is *not* in case you're not sure if you should pick it up:-it is not a dense, instructional, or academic primer about creativity.-although Gilbert applies her thinking to all types of creativity, it's not really about anything but writing. Gilbert is a writer, and her examples are about writing. Although, someone who needs inspiration to pursue that creative hobby they've always loved may find some here.-it's not high brow, and nothing Gilbert talks about is researched or proven. I guess that relates to the first point, which is thatThis is a very *light* book. It's an encouraging book. And it's a book that contains, I think, some ideas you may not have heard before, or ideas we don't hear enough. Namely the idea that if you think about inspiration and writing ideas as independent spirits floating about in the ether, you need to do everything you can to attract them. Also that there's no reason to suffer for art, but there's every reason to enjoy it.I don't really think Gilbert meant for her ideas to constitute a "religion of writing." But it's helpful to think about, in terms of your own positivity, dedication, and openness to creativity. Gilbert assures us that if we approach writing with joy, if we ignore all of the excuses we create not to write (I'm not good enough, I'm too old, I don't have an MFA, it will never pay, etc etc), and make space for creativity in our lives, that the writing will come, and it will be fulfilling.I gave this book 4 stars because anytime I picked it up and read a few pages (I deliberately took more than a year to finish it), I was guaranteed to write afterward. So that's how I used it. Whenever I needed encouragement, I read a few pages. Whenever I was feeling overwhelmingly negative about writing, I read a few pages. Whenever I was convinced that I would never write a decent word, I read a few pages. In this way, I savored the book like Charlie savors his bar of chocolate for a whole month, nibbling at it in the dead of night when he needed it most.In sum, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is looking to study, or intellectually explore creativity. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to write. It worked for me. And I'll come back to it again whenever I'm feeling low about writing, because without fail, it made me want to write. And that's it.

Sketching User Experiences: The Workbook

Review

"In Sketching User Experiences, Buxton gave a compelling argument as to WHY sketching is so important to design. In this excellently-designed companion, he and his co-authors show HOW. I have been haranguing students for years with the message that they should be doing a lot of sketching, and this is the first guide I can really use to show them what it means and how it works."--Terry Winograd, Professor at Stanford University and founding faculty member of its 'D.School' and author of Bringing Design to Software "As an interaction designer who teaches, I’ve waited a while for a book like this! Sketching User Experiences – The Workbook is a design-by-doing guide for practitioners and students on how to integrate design practice, techniques and thinking into the practices of human-computer interaction and interaction design. As the companion piece to Bill Buxton’s Sketching User Experience, this book is a one-two combination for learning and doing design in a world of interaction."--Ron Wakkary, Associate Professor at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology, Simon Fraser University and Co-Editor-in-Chief of ACM interactions magazine "Don’t be put off by the title. This is a book for non-artists, albeit those developing user interfaces who recognise how much visual communication helps clients and colleagues understand design concepts. If, as a non-artist, you already produce ‘visuals’ you probably use software with a library of images and preformed shapes…This is a very positive book for the non-artist. It is profusely and relevantly illustrated and has a 50:50 balance between print and illustrations, which makes it very easy to dip into for ideas. The layout of the 250 pages is a demonstration of how uncluttered layout combined with simple design produces a highly effective teaching tool. To reinforce the point, there is also a detailed index."--BCS.org "Based on the authors' experience that sketching is an essential part of design, this excellent workbook is aimed at getting either students or professionals into the practice. Each chapter begins with a list of the necessary materials and ends with a "You Now Know" section, as well as occasional exercises. Tips on how to handle things that may arise during sketching are provided and the book is illustrated with color photographs and hand drawn-illustrations."--Reference and Research Book News, October 2012

Over the past two years I've spent many evenings and weekends teaching myself everything I can about IA/UX/IxD and so have surveyed many of the books available. For the most part those books can be broken into two categories. The first are theory books (About Face 3,Information Architecture for the World Wide Web) and design pattern books (Designing Interfaces,Designing Web Interfaces) (Not to mention user research books but that's a whole different step of the process).Unfortunately, I haven't found too many books that focus on the skills of sketching a user experience. I have read and worked through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and Visual Meetings but found the first was really focused on fine art sketching and the later is really focused on meetings and sharing general ideas with people. Sketching User Experiences is a good in between that focuses on the practical skills of sketching interfaces and experiences and communicating that to others. The book starts with very basic sketching exercises and by the end gets into really fun and tangible advanced techniques. Some of the more advanced techniques I loved involve creating sketches from photos, creating hybrid sketches (photos + sketches) and building poster board prototypes of physical devices. Each exercise in the book is discrete and has a clear set of instructions, an explanation of how it fits into the user-centered design process and references to follow up with. Each exercise was structured enough that if you want to pick and choose things to do it's perfect for that. All in all I would recommend this book for IA/UX/IxD professionals of all levels and anyone else who needs to communicate user experiences to others. I especially think this book would be useful for developers who are looking for a better way to express their ideas (or frustration) to clients, designers and other stakeholders because there is a big enough range of exercises that he should be able to find something that works. The other place I would recommend this book would be for an advanced user interfaces undergrad/graduate level college course. There's enough work in here to make for a -really- fun semester's worth of work. I hope a professor picks this up and builds a course around it :)Happy sketching :)

I use this book regularly in classes to teach software developers what a basic user experience design process looks like. It it accessible and concise. It has lots of illustrations and examples, and includes useful exercises. If you or your team would like to work on more modern user interfaces, this book will guide you through part of the process to do it. It's not really about the understanding phase of design, so it doesn't cover aspects such as user observation, but it covers the sketching phase quite well.If you like it, you can move on to the conceptual book that inspired this one: Sketching User Experiences: Getting the Design Right and the Right Design by Bill Buxton. You might also be interested in Bill Buxton's videos, which are available on the usual video sites.

I am not a designer - but have been reading a lot about design and this is by far one of the most practical books you will buy. Some of the techniques are practical and wil change the way you do wireframes. I guess these are commonplace techniques used by designers but for non-designers it just changes your perspective. This is a true workbook, so be prepared to spend time doing versus reading-you wont be disappointed especially if you are an engineer looking to learn design. It is not a book about principles of design (there are many books out there that do that), this is a book about practical, real world techniques. Before reading this book I thought sketching is for the "creative designers", but the techniques here (take pictures, trace) make it really simple.

Especially for people who are and are not artists (as in everyone), this book presents using sketching for any project that requires innovation and multiple steps. In the first pages, it demonstrates that ideas can be expanded, discarded for something better, improved and entirely new approaches realized. While this is available in all disciplines, sketching is a good medium for capturing and exploring ideas from daily exposures. I'm thoroughly enjoying reading and using the ideas.

This book provides several methods with detailed descriptions an tips to sketch your idea, perform interaction design, animate interaction, present sketch and collect feedback, also covering guidelines to designing with teams and presenting to groups.

Amazing review of sketching and the thought process behind sketching.Easy to follow with lots of pictures, examples, and exercises. Would highly recommenced to product managers or UI designers looking to improve their sketching skills.

The Workbook is a great hands-on way to learn the thought process of UX design. It is very easy to follow, and it will get you in the habit of observing interfaces around you...and definitely get you sketching.I found that a lot of their suggestions for collecting images, ideas, etc could be done with Pinterest, but as I said before, this is a very hands-on book, and the authors seem to prefer physical collections over virtual ones.Great ideas for creating templates to work from, using office supplies to make iterations, and more :)As someone interested in becoming a UX designer I know this will be a valuable resource!

Few more pictures that I like but overall very good.
