Review
“I know of no other such a broad and coherent statement of Foerster's essential thinking.†(―Ranulph Glanville Professor Emeritus of Architecture and Cybernetics, The Bartlett, University College London, UK)Heinz Von Foerster spent most of his career seeking to understand cognition based on neurophysiology, mathematics, and philosophy. He came to a new understanding of knowledge which led to a new epistemology. What this book reveals is that after retiring from the University of Illinois, von Foerster reinterpreted his earlier professional training in physics and the sciences generally from the new perspective. The conversational structure and style of the book brilliantly gives von Foerster the opportunity to retell the story of creation by referring to all of the various branches of natural science, but with the additional insight of the new epistemology. This is a remarkable achievement which will delight any serious student of the natural sciences or of scientific writing. The scholarship that went into the conversation that the book records, both the questions and the answers, is impressive. The ideas here will be of particular interest to ambitious younger scientists looking for new lines of research. (―Stuart Umpleby George Washington University)

It’s appropriate that the first sentence of this review is about its own first sentence and that the first paragraph will tell you more about the reviewer than the self-reference-themed work under review. Before I get to the review, I have a disclaimer to make: I sit on the board of the Meaning Systems book series, of which The Beginning of Heaven and Earth Has No Name is part, a circumstance which should dispose me toward a favorable review. However, I actually come to this work via a branch of the system theory family that has remained somewhat aloof to von Foerster’s group, so I was prepared to be critical. The reasons for the lack of interest in von Foerster among some in related fields seems to me now, after having gotten to know von Foerster a bit better, to be based mostly on lack of familiarity. His works sets up important questions about the meaning of meaning, which later researchers ignored, for practical reasons. But now we have come full circle, and we must address such questions before we can make any further progress in epistemology or biology. After reading this book, I still have a bit of a quarrel with him, or rather a difference in emphasis, over the issue of constructivism. I still think he takes too radical a view. But I think many of my colleagues don’t take self-reference seriously enough, and there are lessons to be learned on all sides of this many-sided extended family. Clearly, the causality of living beings is circular, as von Foerster believes, but the wheel does get some traction in reality, usually with biological representations, less often with mental representations, which are biological representations of biological representations. If it were not the case that representations have contact with (ever-changing) reality, living beings would not appear to be purposeful, would not be adapted to their environments. But enough about my argument. The book represents a series of discussions that von Foerster had with the editors over a period of six days. (On the seventh day they rested.) Throughout the “trialogue,†von Foerster likes to throw statements back at his interlocutors. For example, he says that when a scientist espouses a Big Bang theory, the astrophysicist tells us more about himself than the conditions of the early universe. I suspect that von Foerster overstates his case to make a point. His style of argumentation is nothing if not playful. He likes to turn our general assumptions inside-out to get us thinking in productive ways. To say the Big Bang theory says something about its promoters and something about the possible conditions of the early universe isn’t quite strange enough a statement to generate new ideas. Von Foerster was not interested in being right so much as getting people to think, and this makes for very refreshing reading, once you accept his methods.Like this book reviewer, the editors of The Beginning of Heaven and Earth Has No Name, Karl Muller and Albert Muller, begin by writing about their own first sentence, their own first paragraph and self-referentiality. It’s a fun way to begin a scholarly book, and the Mullers reminded me of John Shade’s editor. The Mullers’ contributions add significantly to the overall success of the communication. The humor and the conversational mode make this volume informative without being dull. Von Foerster tends to represent concepts visually rather than abstractly. This is nice. He provides many anecdotal illustrations, a couple of which I made use of last week when trying to explain self-organization to a general audience. I will be quoting from this book for years to come. It’s a trove of pithy statements and pertinent examples, largely because he apparently understands how people understand. Consequently, he doesn’t teach; he helps the reader learn.Von Foerster’s work dealt with eignenvalues, bistable functions, and recursive functions a decade or so before my mentors, complexity science workers, came along and renamed these “attractors,†“catastrophe†and “chaos theory,†respectively. He is rather good natured about the fact that these workers followed Picaso’s example. Von Foerster’s names are more accurate, less misleading. Clarity in nomenclature reveals clarity in concepts. In an English translation, eigen can mean one’s “own†or one’s particular/peculiar characteristics. It is inherent characteristics or formal qualities of a system that tend to constrain the equations that describe its behavior: nothing pulls or attracts. Listening in on his conversations with his friends and colleagues, the reader is struck by how sensible and down-to-earth this sleight-of-hand logician can be.The novice will enjoy reading this as much as a specialist will. No prior understanding of cybernetics or constructivism is required to get the humor and the wisdom. Von Foerster’s work is still alive today and propagating itself throughout the theories of various thinkers. In sum, this is a useful book.
