I was afraid, given the author's TV appearances etc., that this would be too foofy a treatment of this topic. But it is seemingly well-researched and is well-written. The call-out boxes are particularly well-done, giving context to what might otherwise be a laundry-list of demons. She also connects them to one another, not just by their connections in the same pantheon but showing how a demon/angel/god in one period became another demon/angel/god in another period. I like this! And now when I watch horror movies or listen to black metal, I can look up whatever demon they're referencing!
Do you like demons? Do you like names? Do you think you might need to do an exorcism or three? This is a handy book to have around. I am staggered by the amount of research that went into this, it's worth the read.
This book has so much information. It doesn't only talking about demons it talks about angels and the levels of angels and demons there are. The book also has historical guidelines of the history of demons and what people thought of them prior, during and after Christ.
Well... it has a lot of names and a paragraph or so explaining that this or that one is a "duke" and has so many legions under it but what exactly is a duke demon to begin with? ...how did it become a "duke" and what does that entail? How was that information obtained to begin with and when mentioning various grimoires it might have done some good to explain more of what the difference is between them, where they came from, etc. In other words unless you're on the same level of knowledge as the author you're likely to come away with more questions than answers as I did. Then as time went on and I would hear a name of a demon I would look to this as a guide to see who it is and rarely has it been in this book. Now I admit right up front that I am a complete novice when it comes to my understanding of the way things are in Hell or why and how they operate the way they do... but I didn't gain any of that knowledge here either. Michelle obviously has a lot of knowledge in this subject and I wish that she would write a Demons and Hell for Dummies book lol... as funny as that sounds I am serious. I think it would be great to write a book (and it would have to likely be many volumes) explaining all that there is to know - for what knowledge is available... from all and any source complete with any and all photos that can be linked. Explaining what hell is to begin with... the views that various religions have on it from Catholicism to Satanists. Telling the story - but not posting any opinion rather fact of cases. what was written about it, by whom, when. why it was written and the context of the times to maybe give the whole picture of why it came about to begin with. Also the relation between thought becoming reality... like attracting like. etc. Also... we know that some believe that saying a demons name makes such demon become aware of the one who spoke it.. but can reading it also do the same since thought has more weight than just something that runs through our mind? We all know the effect of positive or negative thinking... and there has been studies on how even a written word had effect on water molecules. [...] so if that is true then are we truly safe trying to learn more about mankinds natural enemy? I understand that the writing of books of that magnitude will engulf a persons life for many years likely... but it would also be the first of its kind and last through the ages. How many people out there have the knowledge today that Michelle has? How many years did it take for her to gather that knowledge? From how many places? How many experiences personal to her brought her to the discovery of new information she may never had sought out otherwise? Then ask yourself what are the chances of someone else gaining that same knowledge in the same lifetime? ..century even? ... and since like attracts like she likely knows others who are masters in this knowledge.. if they put their heads together truly much good could come of it. If I had the knowledge and skill I would do it myself as the only thing we leave here with is the good or bad we have done others and a voluminous book like the one I just pled for would surely help numerous others for possibly centuries... and just that info alone in one place could save someone else the time so they can further the learning for mankind. The one to take it to the next step to put it all together to unravel the mysteries of our minds and possibilities... and I truly believe that we as a nation will only go so far with technological advancement until our spiritual advancement catches up. For the material advancement to continue growth at such a rapid pace without the spiritual stability behind it will resort to mans lower appetites whereas evil will come of it instead of the good.. to a point at least.
Michelle Belanger is a prolific writer and never writes about something that she has not been thoroughly educated. This was a very intense book that I as a sensitive had a great deal of difficulty (my issue not hers) having it in the house. This is a book for someone who is educated enough to be careful and educated in it's use. This book is not for the novice. Once again Michelle, bravo!
I love the book from just glancing at a page or 2 info.i really bought the book for 2 reasons the great reviews that it was given and working with goetia angels or demons.it one that will not talk to you or do anything for you unless a lot about demons.so i can work with him I need to know all I can. also a lot of people write books and use the same demon over and over with a different names.so this book would give me more info. this my first dictionary . but I was guided to this book from the other side so I know it will meet beyond my expectations and more!! also thank to the others on here for your reviews it was a help to me!! thank for reading my review!!
this book is kick ass. it should become the next Necromincom or whatever that one that didn't exist but after over a century of existance it still does and man can it be pricey. Regardless, this book is an impressive piece of work and my compliments to the author, editors and publishers. I was a history major and I love to write on top of that. These days you rarely see the melding of english being used correctly throughout, proper grammar and proper use of our language to discuss just about evrey demon and related tradesperonnel that you can imagine. Very well researched, also put together and some one else finishes it off. Get it, I can guarantee you'll be using it sooner than you think. Thanks so much, glad to see you home safely. I'm headed back home now. thanks
The Dictionary of Demons: Names of the Damned by Michelle Belanger is one of the best detailed works of its kind. It lays out in an easy to follow guide on the infernal names of demons and the art and images are amazing. The side articles are both informative and precisely placed, offering additional facts on demonology from medieval and Renaissance Europe, without breaking up the flow of the primary content of the tome. A very hefty 384 page volume, it is a must have on the subject for anyone's library on religion, the paranormal and the macabre. I highly recommend this book as one of the best to be written on the subject!Corvis NocturnumAuthor of: Embracing the Darkness; Understanding Dark Subcultures, and most recently, Allure Of The Vampire; Our Sexual Attraction To The Undead.
