Diagnosed @ 59, realized symptoms appeared earlier than 30s slowly progressing. My oldest sister of 6 yrs. also has MS. Like my sister MS exploded when 52. Unlike my sister it went unrecognized until I advanced to Secondary Progressive MS. I knew I was complicit in its manifestation. Learned on my own much of what Dr Fox’s book reveals which reinforces trust in my intuition. I am mesmerized by his healing! Reading this book renewed my determination. I DO hv control & MS is my gateway. MS has unexpectedly & often, knocked me on my ass, both figuratively/literally. Now 63, this book is an inspiration. I’m deeply appreciative Dr Fox for sharing his life & healing. BTW, I’m Debbie, felt a bit of synchronicity in that his wonderful late wife’s name too, was Debby. Thank u Dr Fox.

Thank you for telling your story. A great read for anyone, but a must read for anyone who has been affected by MS. Highest recommendation.

Interesting! It was worth reading and learned a few things. Definitely an ok buy for something to read regarding MS.

This book is so well written both professionally and personally! Dr. Fox enlightened me regarding both his personal life story and his struggles and fight against MS. I believe both the medical community and those not familiar with medical terminology will find this book to be a great resource. It is the best most thorough account I have ever read showing how courage, determination and at times sheer grit can do battle with a chronic disease. It emphasizes the importance of early and correct diagnosis in combination with using Western and Eastern medical techniques to have the best chance of getting this disease into remission. I have already recommended this book to others suffering from MS and will continue to put the word out there. Dig in and get started!!

Thank you for sharing your story Dr. Fox. As an incoming first year medical student, this book provided me with a unique perspective on the difficulties patient experience while dealing with diseases such as MS. In addition, it also helped me understand the importance of treating the patient rather than the disease. The use of precision medicine in the form of combination medicine is incredible. Again, thank you for sharing your personal life. I will recommend this book to all of my fellow colleagues!

I just got out of an MRI that was a follow up to a CT scan I don’t know if I have MS or a tumor but either way I feel braver and ready for my next steps to taking care of my health.I very much appreciated the realm of practical and spiritual advice. Bless you.

This book had different approaches with dealing with MS and ways you can recover from MS that aren’t talked about publicly or that i have seen in other books or articles. This book really did make a difference of how I view life with MS.

Thank you Dr. Steven Fox for giving your audience a personal glimpse into your journey with MS. I finished the book cover to cover in a day and felt your pains as if they were my own and to witness how you found ways to heal and deal with your MS, abuse, loss brought me much enlightenment for my own journey.

This is an astonishing book. Including the glossary and notes, it tops 600 pages. I am not a fast reader, and I read it in a week. I should say at the outset that I had a personal interest in the material, having lost a partner to AIDS in Boston in 1984 and many friends in the subsequent years. This book has frequently been compared to Randy Shilts' "And the Band Played On" but is more tightly focussed on the formation of ACT UP and its impact on the ultimate development of life-saving drugs. Despite a staggering amount of detail, I was never bored and rarely confused, a testament to Mr. France's meticulous presentation of material. While it often reads as a chronicle of failures, both by government officials and pharmaceutical companies, the author never lets the reader move away from a connection to real people doing deeply committed work under the worst possible circumstances. I cared about them personally and ached for their suffering as year after year passed with only AZT, a drug toxic for most patients and with terrible side effects, to turn to. I hope that there is a special place in Hell for Burroughs-Wellcome executives, Ronald Reagan, Archbishop John O'Conner and Senator Jesse Helms, people who intentionally held back progress on finding a cure for AIDS for their own financial benefit or out of some perverted religious belief.I bought a copy of the documentary of the same name last year and was deeply moved. There is a visceral difference between reading about Peter Staley scaling the entrance to buildings at the FDA and the NIH and seeing a video taken of the event. I watched the dvd again after finishing the book and felt devastated all over again. Reading the book had deepened my understanding of what happened and my love for the people involved, and seeing them on film, so many of whom died, broke my heart. It's worth having your heart broken to read this book.

Just finished this book. It was so good. I've read "and the band played on" and loved it but this was much better researched especially because it was done with 20/20 hindsight and not when AIDS was still killing tens of thousands of people per year. The book was mostly focused on what happened in NYC and Act-up (Vs. SF based.) What ACT UP! did was truly astounding. They changed the way drug trials were done, the speed of them, how people were found for them, got companies to do parallel studies without placebos for those who didn't meet the stiff criteria of official studies, and most importantly, broke down the secretive doors of pharmaceutical companies and got them to involve People with AIDS in all sort of ways, to the benefit of the companies and the people who needed the drugs. It's hard to believe what it was like back then PWA's when it was basically a death sentence for everyone.... Hard to fathom what they went through-the utter despair when dozens and dozens of friends and lovers would die a year. And the way gay people were treated and discriminated against-it is so unbelievable. And the horrible way Reagan and the Republicans (and to a large extent, Democrats too) in congress ignore AIDS for 9 years because they disliked gayness and thought that AIDS was god's retribution. It was an enthralling and horrifying book. Very well researched, a little slow in the beginning but it really gets interesting about 1/3 of the way through.

David France has been involved in the New York gay scene since, by coincidence, almost precisely the time that the AIDS epidemic was first noted in the press in July 1981. So, aside from the previous decade following the 1969 Stonewall Riots, as a journalist he saw the plague and the gay community’s devastation by it and fight against it first hand. In 2012, he wrote, produced and directed a film documentary by the same name that was so outstanding it was nominated for an Academy Award. For me, that documentary remains, even since this book, uniquely incredible and a hard act to follow. It is a brilliantly compelling and moving account, with a lot of archival footage, of the ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) movement composed of mostly AIDS sufferers from its March 1987 founding. By that point, tens of thousands of mostly homosexual men in the U.S. had already died horrible deaths, everyone infected was doomed to the same fate, and there was no effective cure or treatment in sight. But ACT UP’s highly publicized civil disobedience actions at the White House gates, the National Institutes of Health and elsewhere and its success in gaining inclusion on official boards evaluating experimental treatment options, is widely credited, including by the nation’s foremost public health official Dr. Anthony Fauci, with playing a critical and indispensable role the discovery of an effective treatment by 1996.In late 1996 when, having been an early post-Stonewall gay activist myself, I learned that Time magazine had named Dr. David Ho, a long-time AIDS researcher, its ‘Person of the Year,’ I breathed a deeper sigh of relief than for any time in the previous 15 years. It was an affirmation that, indeed, a life-saving treatment for the hideous AIDS had been found. Dr. Ho is not even mentioned in France’s documentary or book because to France’s mind, and undoubtedly in reality, it was the ACT UP activists and the researchers willing to work with and learn from them who finally came up with the right combination of protease inhibitor treatments that produced an immediately efficacious and enduring life-saving treatment. From France’s work it is shown how without the input of a faction of ACT UP that formed itself as the Treatment Action Group (TAG) to work on technical research issues the existing efforts whether by the National Institutes of Health or private pharmaceutical companies were fragmented and out of touch with one another.Despite annual world conferences on AIDS research, “there was no global strategy,” so TAG members had to devise a “National AIDS Treatment Agenda” to put the disparate research efforts into one comprehensive strategy. It was in 1995, after the first discovery of the “protease inhibitor” that an “activist- proposed drug design” combining therapies was introduced, and almost immediately began to work wonders. Within 30 days, very ill patients became symptom free, Fauci said, calling it “a Lazarus effect.”The treatment was provided to hundreds of thousands of AIDS patients in the U.S. and then overseas, especially in Africa, and began saving literally millions of lives. As with his film documentary, France does an excellent job of telling the story in his book, including with some key information the documentary didn’t include, such as exactly how ACT UP came to be formed in 1987. Earlier activist split offs from existing gay organizations, like the Lavender Hill Mob and the Swift and Terrible Retribution Committee, had begun “zaps,” spontaneous street theater and office takeover demonstrations, following a solemn but massive, 200,000-strong June 1986 Gay Pride parade that was greeted with newspaper headlines reporting that a Supreme Court decision had ruled 5-4 to uphold a Georgia gay sex ban. That December, an anonymous effort pasted lower Manhattan with three thousand black posters with an inverted pink triangle and the words “Silence = Death.”Larry Kramer, having been on a hiatus after the highly-successful production of his hard-hitting AIDS-themed play, “The Normal Heart,” decided it was time to spark something new.Ah yes, Larry Kramer! This man had enraged the official gay community in 1978 with the publication of his best selling novel, Faggots, because it exposed the depths of sexual promiscuity and depravity that much of the New York and other urban gay scenes had descended to by then. He was subjected to a massive display of denial and angry insistence on keeping such “secrets” away from the outside world. The leadership, such as it was, of the so-called gay movement then was composed mostly of gay sex club, bathhouse and bar owners, many with ties to the Mob, in an alliance with the sex-addicted often-nightly patrons of their establishments insisting that gay liberation was synonymous with massive amounts of anonymous sex.Kramer was like an Old Testament prophet sounding an alarm. Many never forgave him from that time forward, but the evidence is clear from the wider corpus of his work that he was motivated not out of hate, anger or personal repression, but out of a deep love and compassion for gay people. (It is relevant that science learned just this year that the HIV virus that causes AIDS was present in the blood of many gay men collected in the early 1970s, at the time the “sexual revolution” first broke out. The HIV did not enter the picture in the mid-1970s, as previously thought, by introduction to the U.S. probably from Africa. It had been here much earlier, and sexually-active gay men were playing Russian roulette since 1970 not only with all the other STDs of the day, but unbeknownst to them, also a virus that would wind up killing at least 600,000 of them.)This was shown when the first public reports of a gay “cancer” was first reported in July 1981. It was Kramer to leaped into action to organize a grass roots political response, the formation of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. But in a subculture swimming with petty jealousies and fear, Kramer’s insistence on strident action was too much, and he became marginalized.Still, that only led to his authorship and production of a quasi-autobiographical “The Normal Heart,” the powerful play that exposed the plight of sick and dying gay men, and a pathetic lack of government response, to a much wider audience. Then, in 1987, when the effort against AIDS was going absolutely nowhere, it was Kramer, again, who provided the spark for the formation of ACT UP that ultimately got the gay community activated to get the results it needed.Due to a last-minute cancellation, Kramer got to fill the program for the March 1987 meeting of a monthly speaker series at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center. This was the opportunity he needed, and he didn’t miss it. He organized an array of activists to show up. “I’m going to try to organize a civil disobedience group,” Kramer said to a friend, as France quoted him. “I’m putting friends in the audience as plants. When I call for people to help me organize a demonstration, I need you to stand up and join in and rabble rouse.”Some 250 gay men showed up. As France wrote, “Kramer’s savage oratory power, honed over his years of screed writing, swelled as he read his prepared remarks. ‘If my speech tonight doesn’t scare the s*** out of you, we’re in trouble,’ he told them. ‘I sometimes think we have a death wish. I think we must want to die. I have never been able to understand why we have sat back and let ourselves literally be knocked off man by man without fighting back. I have heard of denial, but this is more than denial – it is a death wish!”France wrote that the presentation morphed the group into a “Capraesque town hall meeting” full of energy and animated talk. He wrote, “The fuse caught fire…Kramer’s strategy had worked. Something brand new was afoot.”Still, people accused Kramer of wanting to become famous for this effort. It is a sad thing, but a reality that people who can only think in terms of such things, or in terms of hate or vengefulness, can only assign similar motives to others. To an observer like me, it is clear that everything Kramer did, including his stridency, was done more out of love than anything else. The world still won’t acknowledge that, in the context of how bad the AIDS plague was, he was right from the start and almost all the others were wrong.France is ambiguous about Kramer in his book. On the one hand, he wrote in his introduction, “No individual was more responsible for galvanizing the AIDS movement than Kramer. His plays, books and essays over the years pushed the gay community to demand that the world take notice.”But in another place he claimed that Kramer did almost more harm than good, although not with the viciousness of gay blogger Andrew Sullivan in his review of France’s book in the New York Times Book Review of Nov. 27. Sullivan wrote, “There was the despised Larry Kramer, fresh off excoriating gay men’s sex lives in his novel, Faggots, who bravely confronted the core problem of transmission, but who also displayed a personal viciousness that derailed the movement as much as galvanized it.”In his book, France underscored his ambiguity about Kramer by quoting a gay leader who wrote a highly critical letter to Kramer, saying, “You should beg the forgiveness of every gay man who you have caused pain,” but then credited Kramer “with raising the visibility of the epidemic like no one else by working to become, ‘like Goethe, the personification of an era much linked with sadness and death.’”The most serious shortcoming of France’s work is in his effort at applying pop psychology to Kramer and others in the struggle, saying Kramer owed his stridency to a “stern father,” and his tendency “to see the world as a battle between aloof parent figures and rejected children.”How about the fact that an entire generation of gay men were being wiped out by the most heinous of incurable diseases being his motivator? The pop psychology is just so much BS and really a terrible take-down of Kramer’s motives. There is a valid point to the charge of “tone policing” that feminists are increasingly talk about. It is a silencing tactic that protects privilege and silences people who are hurting, often targeting women. (In Keith Bybee’s book, How Civility Works, he notes that feminists, Black Lives Matter protesters, and anti-war protesters have been told to “calm down and try to be more polite.” He argues that tone policing is a means to deflect attention from injustice and relocate the problem in the style of the complaint, rather than to address the complaint.”) Kramer continues to be a huge target of this kind of “tone policing.”Surely, the heroic role of many in the ACT UP struggle cannot be ignored, the work of Peter Staley, Bob Rafsky, Mike Harrington, Greg Consalves, Spencer Cox, Jim Eigo, Ann Northrup, Iris Long, David Barr, Derek Link, Gregg Bordowitz, Bill Bahlman, and of course, their predecessors like Joe Sonnabend, Michael Callen, Richard Berkowitz, Mathilda Krim and many others.Something that France’s book does not include is the added level of pain above the medical and physical pain of AIDS victims, worst of all being the brutal and complete rejection of young AIDS victims by their own parents and families throughout that period.France tells the stories of a couple AIDS victims who were being cared for by their parents as they expired. But there were many, many more cases of total rejection of AIDS victims by their own parents, and left to die with an emptiness in their hearts even more painful than their physical illness.Even today, the rejection of young gay men and women by their families is heartbreaking, with an estimated full 25 percent of homeless persons being young gays. The story of ACT UP is not so much about glorified heroism as about a resolve to live. Staley said when he and others were about to toss the ashes of loved ones over the White House fence in 1992 that, “Some are making something beautiful out of the epidemic, but there’s nothing beautiful about a box of ashes and bone chips. There’s no beauty in that.”When France wrote of the real breakthrough being found in 1996, he confessed, “It had been many years since I had cried – maybe I hadn’t shed a tear since Doug’s memorial service – but now tears rolled down my cheeks. When I caught my breath again, it came in sobs. Was it over? Was the long nightmare passed?”“Tears filled Spencer Cox’s eyes,” he wrote. “’We did it,’ he whispered to the person sitting beside him. ‘We did it. We’re going to live.’” I knew the feeling, as every gay man in the nation must have that day.Final point, I suggest that France’s work be examined from the standpoint of what he doesn’t say about how a new plague might be avoided.

I would actually give this book a 2.5 stars. I am very disappointed in the way this book is written. The author writes as if he is writing for 5th graders. And some of the repetitive sentence structures were annoying. “He then did this.” She then did that.” Just write “Then he did whatever.” Or try the word NEXT! Also, it’s OK to use contractions. People don’t talk like... “I did not go here.” “I thought to myself, ‘I should not do this.’”And, OMG, the Callaway character is just a mess. He wants to do good but doesn’t but knows he should but can’t. Terribly portrayed and miserable to read about. And then the chapters alternate between Callaway and the 2 primary detectives in a way that is jumpy and difficult to follow.I got so frustrated with the poor writing style I had difficulty enjoying the story! Skimmed a lot to finish the book

Tragedy strikes the family of Dect. Gary Holt. His nephew, Isaiah is found shot three times in the car belonging to one of his coaches. There were traces of heroin in the glovebox. There were also texts from a woman friend who happened to be a call girl. How was this possible? Lee Callaway,a local PI was running low on cash. Fortunately a woman was climbing up the stairs to his office looking to hire him. When she came inside he noticed that she was blind, wearing sunglasses and using a white cane. One strange thing was she also wore gloves. She wanted him to find her sister who has been missing for three months. She handed him an envelope with $5000 in it. Strangely enough, both cases overlapped. With people disguised and using aliases, both the police and Lee had a lot of investigating to do. Ultimately each case came to a head with many crazy solutions!

Not bad for a new series. I have bought book two of this new series. I have also read all of this authors other books. He is great writer.

This book is very entertaining and with the short chapters very easy to read. The plot is imaginative and the story used to reveal the plot is interesting. This is the kind of book you wish would never end. the characters are easy to like and the story moves at a quick pace.

This is a very good read. It's easy to follow, intriguing and even comical at times. Just a very believable story

I love Thomas FIncham books, would recommend them to anyone who loves a mystery.

another excellent book from Mr. Fincham....I am always left with the feeling of "when is his next book coming out"...and thank goodness he has found his calling in being an author....

Another excellent book by Mr Fincham. I enjoyed every moment of this excellent read. When you have a good book to read all else is non existent, like sleep.

My brief background - civilian, never knew much about the military, and decided it was something I wanted to pursue. Next thing I knew, I was signed up to take this exam, and needed to review for it. Searching online, I found very few study resources (a few books, some informative websites), and for the books that I found, there were not many reviews.I went ahead and purchased this book to serve as a framework for my studying, and I was not let down. The book does a great job at explaining to you what you need to review - topics, subject matter, concepts, examples. Included in the back is a very solid practice exam that you should be comfortable completing upon finishing your studies.I will say this - while the book does a great job at outlining ASTB concepts and subject matter, you will need to pair this book with practice math/reading/mechanics problems (I used flashcards on proprofs - google "astb proprofs") to best prepare. This book does a great job at giving you the knowledge base you need, and with continued practice, you will be in great shape for the exam.In short - a great guideline for the exam, a great resource to frame your studies around. Very informative, I would have been lost without it.

Awful, but not the most awful one out there. Practice tests are useless and hardly even similar to the actual astb. However, unlike 2 other ones Ive tried, at least contains some useful info. Dont use as your only study material. And certainly not anywhere near worth the 35 bucks I paid.

Studies this for about a month and took some online tests and passed with a 5-8-6. The material inside is relevant to what's on the test

I bought this book to help me study for my second attempt at the ASTB. The book was fairly thorough and covered a decently wide range of information. The mechanical section was probably the best. But, the nautical and aeronautics information section seemed like it emphasized the wrong information. Also the spatial aperception was formatted differently than the actual test is. Also, there are several mistakes in the answer keys that are incorrect. Overall not a bad book I suppose, but if you want to do well on the actual ASTB I would suggest looking for a book that more closely mirrors the actual test.

After using this book, I was totally prepared for the test. Granted, I have always been a bit of a math nerd. However, the aviation, nautical, and mechanical example questions proved invaluable when I took the test. On my first sitting I got a 64, 7/7/6. I was told I won't need to take it again.

This study guide is decent for basic knowledge of math and mechanical physics (mechanical comprehension), but it doesn't delve into the higher requirements that are on the OAR - I took the post 11/2013 test, where they've changed the test immensely from what has been explained to me, and this is a more simplified version of that. It helped w/the English portion pretty well, even though the book was actually more in-depth than the questions on the test (longer paragraphs), but the math was quite low for even the starting question and the mechanical portion was lacking.I would recommend using this, along w/SAT prep material for harder math equations to help you on the first portion of the three part test. I recognized quite a bit of the math that was on there from high school, but I haven't been in those kinds of classes in over a decade, so it didn't help much. Try to look for more complicated equations w/answers and explanations, if you're rusty on your more in-depth math and look and look for some more questions about how electricity works and leverage equations that I had in my first study guide.

This book was great to help prepare for the ASTB-E. It help dig up all of the math knowledge that I learned during high school. It will not teach you the skills but if you need a little refresher this book is perfect.

helped my son pass on his first try

Review

“Spectacular. . . . The Buried Giant has the clear ring of legend, as graceful, original and humane as anything Ishiguro has written.” —The Washington Post“An exceptional novel. . . . The Buried Giant does what important books do: It remains in the mind long after it has been read, refusing to leave.” —Neil Gaiman, The New York Times Book Review“Lush and thrilling, rolling the gothic, fantastical, political, and philosophical into one.” —The New Republic“Mesmerizing. . . . A provocative, multilayered mosaic. . . . Lifetimes of myth, allegory, and epic discoveries are contained within.” —The Christian Science Monitor “A literary tour de force so unassuming that you don't realize until the last page that you're reading a masterpiece.” —USA Today“Splendid. . . . Excellent. . . . The Buried Giant is a simple and powerful tale of love, aging and loss.” —The Wall Street Journal “Ishiguro is a master of the uncanny. . . . Few write about the mysteries of the human experience with such grace as Ishiguro, and his prodigious gifts are evident throughout the novel.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Devastating . . . As emotionally ruinous an ending as any I’ve read in a very long time, and it made me circle back to the opening pages, to re-enter the strange mist of this sad and remarkable book.” —Mark O’Connell, Slate “A profound meditation on trauma, memory, and the collective lies nations and groups create to expiate their guilt.” —The Boston Globe “If forced at knife-point to choose my favorite Ishiguro novel, I’d opt for The Buried Giant. It uses the tropes of fantasy to set up a smoke-screen which the book then, by twists and turns, dispels. This reveal gives the book a shadow-plot, and layers of mystery . . . An ideas-enabler, a metaphor-animator.” —David Mitchell, author of Cloud Atlas and The Bone Clocks “Ishiguro is a deft gut-renovator of genres, bringing fresh life and feeling to hollowed-out conventions. . . . The love story at its center shimmers with a mythic and melancholy grace.” —Vulture “A beautiful, heartbreaking book about the duty to remember and the urge to forget.” —The Guardian (London)  “Powerful and disturbing. . . . Provokes strong emotions—and lingers long in the mind.” —The Economist “A beautiful fable with a hard message at its core. . . . There won’t, I suspect, be a more important work of fiction published this year than The Buried Giant.” —John Sutherland, The Times (London) “A novel of imaginative daring that, in its subtleties of tone, mood and reflection, could be the work of no other writer. . . . In the manner of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, Ishiguro has created a fantastical alternate reality in which, in spite of the extremity of its setting and because of its integrity and emotional truth, you believe unhesitatingly.” — Financial Times

Brief summary and review, no spoilers. This novel takes place in England and the time period is right after the reign of the legendary King Arthur - which is all somewhat deliberately vague. The storyline centers around the travels of 5 main characters. The first two characters we meet - and indeed in many ways the central two characters - are an elderly couple who leave their village in search of their son. Their memories are fading and they are not sure where their son is or even what he looks like anymore. Their reason for leaving their village are hazy as well; ostensibly something to do with their being denied a candle by other villagers. The other characters are a young boy, a brave warrior and a valiant old knight. So much of the storyline is dreamlike and vague and I believe your ultimate enjoyment and satisfaction of this novel is based on the premise that the less you know the better, so I will only say a bit more without causing any spoilers. We know that the characters all unite at some point. We know that they are all on different missions. Their goals are seemingly unclear but will become clear at the end.I loved this book. At the same time I have to say that it was not a quick read for me and there were points up until midway when I thought about giving up on it. Part of this was that I am not usually a fan of books that are somewhat "dreamlike" or surreal and I usually like my stories more straight-forward and grounded. There are lots of points in this book where you feel your own memory is fading; indeed what it might be like to have dementia. That Ishiguro pulls this off so effectively is impressive but daunting for the reader. So for me, this book took a bit of work, but I was so glad by the time I finished that I had read it. The prose, as with any of the other book by this author, is just gorgeous. You really don't want to skip one word and you really shouldn't.I do promise you that it all comes together beautifully by the end, and it was quite an emotional read for me. The storyline is so heartfelt and very mythic in feel and Ishiguro has some poignant and powerful things to say about love and vengeance, morals and ethics and about memory and reflection. Just amazing.Highly recommended.

I have never read anything quite like this ever before..The Buried Giant is part fable, part road-story, part exploration of character: when the point of the journey and the backstory becomes clear, it was as if a light came on. I can think of some people who'd find this writing infuriating: the whole way in which it's handled makes it hard to work out whether what's being described is the world as it is or the world as it's being seen by the characters. Once I'd decided simply to allow the author's approach to work itself out, I loved it: but, as I say, it's a really strange book, a really strange way of writing. And: please note my star rating: once I'd finished it, I thought it brilliant!( I went on to read some of the author's other works: they're quite different, both from this and really, from each other: but just as skilfully written! I now have a new author to follow)

Is it better to remember—or to forget? Is memory a treasure that gives our lives meaning and shapes our identities--or a curse that keeps us from feeling love and acceptance in the present? The Buried Giant is an ideal example of what rich, meaningful, challenging literary fantasy can do.It's reminiscent of Ishiguro's own work (Never Let Me Go similarly exemplifies the potential of literary science fiction) but also of the philosophical, allegorical, character-driven fantasy of Mervyn Peake, Gene Wolfe, Ursula Le Guin, and Margo Lanagan (whose amazing Tender Morsels is also a must-read), among others. Imagine Wolfe's Wizard Knight series with its Arthurian setting and unpredictability but with elderly protagonists, a smaller cast, and a focus on memory (and how it can provide meaning and also create pain--for individuals and nations) and you'll have a good picture of what to expect from The Buried Giant.Literal events are comprehensible with some effort (despite shifting points of view and breaks in chronology as characters start stories and only later explain the events leading up to them), but the novel leaves open profound questions about love, war, violence, and memory. It's also consistently beautiful and engaging at the sentence level--unlike in much generic fantasy (which sometimes presents elaborate worlds and plots but falls flat in emotion, dialogue, and characterization), characters each speak and act in completely distinct ways, and there is wit and meaningful, often moving emotions in the smallest incidents. The novel is more about its characters and themes than its plot, and it isn't dependent on lots of things happening, but by the end, the lives of the characters, and the shape of their world, are indeed fundamentally changed.Unfortunately, books like this often disappoint the two groups of readers who give them a chance: readers of realistic literary fiction, who are turned off that it's fantasy, which they foolishly see as subliterary (even though most of the history of literature before the development of realism actually consists of what we'd now consider fantasy, and the kind of primarily commercial fantasy thought to define the genre is merely an invention of the last few decades), and readers of generic/commercial fantasy, whose conventional expectations (a standard quest, action, completely clear storytelling, an enormous amount of world-building, etc.) will be frustrated by the novel's literary style and focus on character and theme. But for those who can appreciate literary fantasy (my own favorite form of literature), it will be magical--the kind of book to read and reread and give to others in the hopes they will feel the same.

Access code did not work. Now I will have to spend another $120 on Cengage's website to buy a code last minute from them. My return window closed on this item before classes started, so I am out of luck, apparently. In the future please get a product that works.

It said this was new I paid over $100 for it because I needed it for school then when I tried to type in the access code on it for my class it had already been used now I'm waiting on a refund and can't finish my school work until I receive a new one very frustrating

After reading the other reviews, I was a little hesitant to order the codes from Amazon (fulfilled by Amazon) instead of paying extra through the Cengage portal. First, we confirmed that the ISBN number matched the required college course material. Then called Amazon Customer care to ensure that the product was returnable if the code did not work, which Amazon stated that it was returnable if product was opened and the code did not work. With our minds at ease we ordered 2 of these for each of our students. Both codes worked and we saved some money!

I bought this access code for school and the code doesn't even work. I paid $100 and change for a piece of cardboard that does absolutely nothing. What a waste of money.

I was a bit surprised that all I got for the $100 I paid out was a code to enter into my course system.

It is what they say it is, however I was the one at fault for not getting the right code that I needed. So I'm just giving it 5 stars, just to say yes real.

The book is exactly as I ordered. Unfortunately, my class never needed it. So, I can't really speak for the content in it.

Very useful resource for my advanced spreadsheet class.I would recommend this book for people that want a achieve an advanced knowledge of Microsoft excel.
